Superbly acted...great older film

I bought this because my daughter read the book wanted to see the film version. Prime was a superbly acted film--Maggie Smith at her best! Jean Brodie is a complex character--sometimes you like her and other times you raise an eyebrow. Unlike films today that try (too hard perhaps) to tell us why a person is the way they are, Prime leaves one wondering about the real motivations of Jean Brodie.

There are great vignettes throughout that make great scenes for acting classes.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

A wonderful performance by Maggie Smith who is also in her prime. The script is clever and contains some wonderful one liners (ie "The headmistress seeks to intimidate me by the use of quarter hours"). Very atmospheric with at times a disturbing story line that shows the effect of strong personalities on youth. Maggie Smith IS Miss Brodie in all her flamboyance. The angry scene in the headmistresses office is Maggie Smith at her finest. A very fine actress in a memorable performance.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Possibly among the top ten screen performances by a woman, Maggie Smith gives an endearing and ultimately heartbreaking performance as the self-absorbed and deluded Miss Brody. It is a performance of such subtlety and control that it's easy to forget she is acting at all. The script is also good and takes place in the pre-war 1930s in Edinburgh. I saw it years ago and had not seen it since. I will probably watch this one over and over, just to marvel at Maggie Smith's acting (whihc own her an Oscar).

The Prime of Maggie Smith on DVD

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I purchased this DVD because I had read the book and seen the movie years before. I also remembered the song from the movie by Oliver. It's a classic that everyone should own. The superb acting of Maggie Smith is reason enough to purchase this DVD.

I played this on a Samsung laptop I purchased on eBay and was pleasantly surprised at the very good quality of this DVD. Colors were not washed out, and details were fine, not smudged. The audio is also of good quality. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone interested.

Maggie Smith never disappoints! A lovely film.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

My husband has remarked over the years on how much he liked this film so I finally ordered
it for him. I thought he might be disappointed that it did not live up to his memory version!
Not so! He really likes it, and enjoys the period of time in which it is set. Maggie Smith is
wonderful as always and the film is simply set in a more innocent age.
