Hi and Welcome to me first review.... I went with the 2003 movie (DVD)
Prey for Rock and Roll, written by Cheri Lovedog & Robin Whitehouse.
This is one of the most Kick Butt Rock movies I have ever seen! The Music is AWESOME! The cast... You could not ask for better! This is NOT a movie for the family!! The rating is R due to the fact the film has rape, lesbian ladies, drug use, language, sex. It's the story of the band Clam Dandy. Jacki who is two days away from the big 40 is wondering what she's gonna do with her life. This is a hard hitting film that's one heck of a ride. I saw it on TV late one night and was hooked!! I got the DVD and it is one of my faves. Let's the viewer see just what it takes to live the life of a Punk Rock girl with a band.
Drea de Matteo
and a cast of many other fine folks
Theatrical: Oct 3, 2003
Video: Mar 9, 2004
Director: Alex Steyermark
Enter as Jackie is getting ready for a gig...Heavy on the eyeliner and an over voice while we watch her go about the process...
Jacki, tattoo artist by day ROCK GODDESS by night: All my life, all I ever wanted to be was a rock and roll star. I was this dorky seventh grader from the Valley when I had my first cool experience. My boyfriend, Johnny Miller, had his dad drive us to see Ike and Tina Turner at the Hollywood Bowl.(break away to a clip of Tina) Oh man... she scared the *hit out of me! It was the most bad-***ed thing I'd ever seen a woman do. Suddenly, the idea of becoming a teacher or a nurse lost its edge.(cut to Jackie as a girl) Heh, sorry mom. The second after I'd got my driver's license, I grabbed my fake ID, jumped into my Pinto, and headed straight over the hill for Hollywood. I saw the band X (break away to X) at The Whiskey and I fell in love with punk rock. I left that show knowing I had to have my own band. So I got an electric guitar, learned three chords, and conned some chicks into starting a band with me. That was 20 years ago. Today, and God knows how many bands later, not much has changed. Not the gigs, not the clubs, not the money. Tonight we made 13.50 each. Not even enough to support my eyeliner habit. And what lucky ladies get to share this glamorous life with me?(after gig shots and loading amps and such) Let me introduce you to my band. That's Faith.(Lori Petty) Guitar god by night, guitar teacher by day. Oh man, she loves her guitar! I think she only stopped sleeping with it when she started sleeping with Sally.(Shelly Cole) That's Sally. Let's see... if Shirley Temple and Keith Moon had a love child, she'd definitely be Sally. That beautiful mess is Tracy.(Drea de Matteo) Lucky for her, she's a trust fund baby. And a great bass player.
Not for everyone, just a few hard core rock type fans.
Don't hate it, just take it for what it is and ENJOY!!
Right up I love Gina Gershon & was intrigued by the trailer I'd seen elsewhere. I bought a copy of the film & expected to be blown away by something stylishly cool. Although I liked the actresses' portrayals of band mates eternally one step away from the big time, the story let them down somewhat. At times the film had a low-budget feel to it, & the underdevelopment of one character lessens the impact of that character's tragic end. The attempt to develop a relationship between one of the bandmates & her bandmate's brother seems forced & didn't add much to the movie beyond giving the ladies a heavy who could back them up at a key point in the film. This could've been done without trying to develop a relationship between him & one of the ladies. Still, overall, the film is worth a look.
wow...talk about flashback...this is what it's like to try and "make it"..especialy in LA!! i know because i was there. my band is old school hard rock-Hendrix,VH,Kiss type- the songs written for this movie are extremely well done!!! you'll either love this movie or hate it..... rock musicians will trip on the raw reality!!!!!!THIS IS HOW IT IS, BOYS AND GIRLS!!!!! Gina pulled it off....she can sing in my band anytime, if she gets tired of making money as an accomplished actress...ok, i know that ain't ever gonna happen, but give this movie a try, it just might become one of those that becomes an all time personal favorite!!!
Prey for Rock & Roll.....
A movie that if it was promoted by a bigger company would have been a huge hit. I have lived the LA music scene back in the 80's and this hit the spot. Life was not a bed of roses if you were in a band and even less if it was an all girl band back in 80's on Sunset. Gina Gershon played the front woman in an all girl band that loved to play and loved to write music about their life. Some were good hard core fun times and some songs just slapped you in the face with the real life of how hard it was to just survive the scene or even live another day. If you can't find the time to watch it then go on I tunes and download just one song "Post Nuclear Celebration Party Song" and you will be hooked with Gina's voice and how she can rock.
This movie has a great cast also like:
Gina Gershon (Jacki)
Drea de Matteo (Tracy)
Lori Petty (Faith)
Shelly Cole (Sally)
The name of the band was Clam Dandy. Cool name for a all female band!
i have a passion for gina gershon, so i decided to check out this movie. for me, it did not live up to the expectations i have come to have for both gina gershon and drea di mateo. it was entertaining, and even had a quasi-twist near the end, but i felt it was still lacking the zest i thought it would have.
