| The Polkaudio PSW505 is a vintage subwoofer that carries with it a classic aesthetic appeal. Looks aside, this 1-12-inch Polk subwoofer has a polymer composite cone with a lower -3 dB limit of 28 Hz. The Polkaudio PSW505 can offer an output of up to 460 W with a 300 W continuous average, and the slot venting on this vintage subwoofer improves the bass response. All ports are pro-grade 5-way binding posts and an adjustable low pass crossover with phase switch allows this subwoofer to be used with almost any speaker combination. A nifty feature of this Polk subwoofer is an auto on/off feature that automatically shuts off the amplifier and saves power, if no signal is present for 15 minutes. | |

At first I was impressed with the 505 sinc ethe last sub I had was a 70 watt Yamaha that came with a 5.1 speaker set. When I decide to do more research and add a second sub, A friend suggested I try BIC America F-12. Boy was he right! The difference in bass response and sound quality made me upset! I realized that what I thought was excellent strong bass was more like distorted and flopping. My theater area is 14x40, and the F-12 outperforms the 505 substantially. If you have a smaller room then it may sound better since volume will be lower, but in this case it just doesn't cut it.
I wanted more power and Polk is a good name. It is a powered sub woofer with more power than I ever expected. I like running wide open and this unit I can not it just blows me away. Very good and powerful sub woofer , I have a lot of respect for it.
Of all the PSW model of Polk Audio, I believe this is the best. The more the watts, the better punch on the bass. This got 300 watts RMS of continous power. RMS meaning the best sound without any distortion. Which can reach 460 watts dynamic maximum. Compare to other models which have only 150 RMS.
The bass/boom is really clear, tight and punchy. This subwoofer cleanly shakes the house during action scenes. I love it, love it, love it. Oh, by the way, my wife likes love story movies, not too much boom/bass whatsoever will come out (boring). My budget is less than $300, this PSW505 is the best choice for me and definitely love it. No regrets whatsoever.
I enjoy trying different audio equipment and I have owned a few polk audio subwoofers including their current high end subwoofer. I have also had energy, mirage, klipsch, KLH,Sony, and the big boys like HSU and SVS. It really depends on what you are looking for this sub woofer does well for a home theater application. However and its a big however, when it comes to music this sub woofer is terrible. It is very muddy and slow. For the price it can rock the house, but don't expect great SQ. You get what you pay for.
I was looking for an inexpensive subwoofer to compliment my home-built surround system. This one was recommended to me so I took the gamble since the price was right. My one complaint about it is that it doesn't have quite as low of a reach as I hoped. However, it adds a good extra octave to the bottom of my system, integrated fairly seamlessly and has the guts it needs to do the job (and then some).
I should note my mains are driven by a 100 Watt RMS per channel amplifier.
