This is the third and possibly the final installment for the Pirates Of The Caribbean series. Having been filmed back to back with the previous film, Dead Man's Chest, we pick up where we left off with the gang. Jack Sparrow has just been swallowed alive by the Kraken and the East India Trading Company has control over Davy Jones and his devices of torture. Tom Hollander reprises his roll as the menacing Lord Beckett who is attempting to wipe out any and all pirates, (film opens w a line up to the gallows). This time there's not as much explaining to do to follow along with. The final showdown may seem a little querky to the audience being that it's only between three ships out of several hundred, however the visual effects are dazzling and graphic. In this film, Bill Kighy, (Davy) and Naomie Harris, (Tia Lama) have a chance to really appeal to the audience with their relationship as well as having Bill switching back and forth from half human/half squid to an actual human in the effects department. The film also introduces an old pirate brethren hymn called, Hoist The Colours.
This is a rollicking movie, with a phenomenal soundtrack, often breathtaking cinematography, an action-laden script, and a delightfully tongue-firmly-in-cheek performance by Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. It is a bit longer than I expected, but that's not bad for an enjoyable viewing experience. The two-disk set limited edition has some wonderful bonus features, too--though one, "Bloopers of the Caribbean," seems to be missing. I couldn't find it anywhere on the DVD set I bought, at least.
Also be warned: if your DVD player is more than 5 years old, the feature film disk may not play properly on your DVD player. It may not play at all. According to the customer service folk at DisneyDVD.com/support, some of the code on the film's disk is too new for older DVD players to read. But the additional features disk plays just fine.
Normally, the 3rd film of a trilogy won't necessarily make sense without one's first having seen the other two, but this film does stand on its own. Still, seeing Pirates I and Pirates II will enhance one's appreciation of what otherwise would be incomprehensible inside jokes in Pirates III.
I really enjoyed this movie, the action, the scenery/special effects, the plot, all of it. This is the follow up to the second Pirates film-Dead Man's Chest, and it picks right up where #2 left off. You sometimes need to pay attention closely as the plot becomes tangled with various charactors double-crossing one another, but after all, they ARE pirates. Nobody is as good a pirate as Johnny Depp is as Captain Jack Sparrow. An excellent finish(?) to the series, and a darn good movie for everyone to see.
I love the Pirates movies, so since I own the first two, I decided to buy the third one before I had seen it. I mean, you can't have the first two and not have the last one! However, I was a little disappointed about the storyline of this last one-- Kinda hard to follow, too much going on, there were so many new characters and themes. It just wasn't as exciting/entertaining/funny as the first two were. Maybe if I watch it another time I would understand it more.. But apparently I'm not the only one who had a hard time following the plot of the movie: the booklet inside the DVD actually had a Question/Answer section because the movie was so confusing!! Oh well. I guess they got caught up on the special effects (which were pretty cool) and forgot about developing a story. It was an ok movie, but I personally don't think it measured up to the first two at all. I was pretty disappointed. It coulda been so good!! :(
Very energetic movie. Non-stop action with an occasional chuckle. This 3rd in a series isn't as good as the original due to an over-worked storyline. At points in the movie, the story just seems too rediculous to bother anymore, but the action and special effects keep you watching. Overall, good performances by nearly all of the actors and especially Johny Depp. If nothing else, the scene where he is trapped in Davy Jones' locker and is losing his mind is worth the price of buying the movie alone. I'ld have to rate it as a 10/10 on acting - 10/10 on action - 10/10 on special effects - 6/10 on story
