I spent about two months demo'ing clubs - every one on the market at every price point. I feel that these are by far the best overall clubs. Mishits are only barely less accurate than hitting it on the screws. Unless you are a single digit handicapper and can hit forged irons, I really recommend these clubs. The Ping drivers are as good, as well.
All of that said, as you probably know, what sets Pings apart is that to purchase them new, any Ping dealer will take up to an hour to custom fit you and spec out for you not only the length (hence the "colors" of black, red, etc.) but also lay (degrees upright, flat, etc), and even bounce.
But, Ping has a really great "on line" fit program on their web site that if you take a little time to get your own measurements, will get you nearly as close. Go on line, figure out your specs, and then come back to Ebay for a super deal.
I recently bought a set at a golf store with an outside range and knew I was paying at least $200 more to do it. Actually, I think I paid about $850 out the door. But I was happy to do it. The guy that spent over an hour with me was paid by the store. The store pays rent, electricity, insurance, etc - all of the things it needs to do to actually operate a store so I could walk in and get fitted in the first place which (although you are paying retail) they do not charge you for per se.
I do NOT work for a golf store. Nor am I in retail in anyway. So all of that said, guys, do as you think is right but I see a few reviews here with people bragging about going to a store to take the time to get fitted and learn all of their specs, and then running on line to purchase. Ebay is great ! But fellow golfers, if we all start doing that, how long do you think we are actually going to have stores to go into ? To say nothing of the bad "golf karma" of having some store and fellow golfer spend an hour with you under false pretenses. If you are going to buy on line, again, Ping's on-line fitting is great.
I am looking for a set of clubs for my son and will buy them on Ebay. But I also am not taking him down to spend an hour for free, get his specs, and then run on line.
Many golf companies make claims about their irons being longer than
others. Problem is, they aren't going further because of some great new technology; they're just stamping a higher number on the bottom
of the iron, duping undiscriminating buyers. When evaluating irons
for distance I suggest you compare irons by LOFT and don't be fooled
by the number on the bottom of the iron.
With that said I am happy that Ping does not do this. These irons
do go further because of new technology. Ping engineers are actually
working on improving their products as opposed to having marketing
people working on fooling unsuspecting buyers.
But distance is only one aspect of these great irons. They also
have a nice soft feel, are accurate and pretty forgiving for an
iron this size. I have a set and I like them a lot.
The only drawback to them is because they are a high launch lower
spin iron they can roll out on you depending on what ball you use.
You have to adjust to them over a few rounds. And I wish the long
irons had a little less offset. Overall, pretty awesome accomplishment by Ping. These may be the iron of the year for 2012.
I had been playing with a set of Titleist irons I had for twenty three years and played some decent golf with. My friends urged me to invest in some new golf technology so I began researching clubs. After several months of testing and researching I settled on the Ping I20 irons and I could not be happier. They are forgiving on off center hits but most importantly they are very accurate.
The local shop that fitted me wanted over $900 for the set that I found on ebay for under $600. The clubs I bought were used but could only have been played one time because they were perfect.
the ping i20 are just what i was looking for they feel good and look great. I cant wait to use them this summer.the 2% upright feels just right and the light weight shaft lets me feel the club head at all times i love these clubs
This Iron set is a "fitted" set. I went throught the sizing and swing speed considerations prior to buying this iron set. Green dot, Stiff graphite shafts. The results are amazing. I'm hitting the ball straighter than before. Distance is consistant with my previous set, also Pings (i3plus). Shot shaping is much easier with the I20 iron. I have much more control with my draw setup as well as the controlled fade. The 4-U club selection is good for my needs. I will need to pick up a sand or lob wedge for real loft shots. Overall, I couldn't be happier with the irons. And the price was about 1/2 retail value. I believe this set will lower my handicap a few strokes as I hit more greens in regulation. Great set of irons.
