Editorial reviews

"Nominated for five Oscars, PILLOW TALK led to two more Day/Hudson collaborations, but this is by far the best." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Chris Nashawaty (05/11/2012)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]ts star chemistry and warm colours going down like a strong daiquiri. Think MAD MEN without the dark undercurrents."
Total Film - Total Film Staff (07/01/2012)

"A museum piece that's fresh as a daisy, textbook romantic comedy PILLOW TALK remains remake-proof because its meet-cute involves a telephone party line..."
Sight and Sound - Patrick Fahy (08/01/2012)

Eavesdropping was never so "FUN"! ~ DAY & HUDSON SHINE~

Review For: Pillow Talk (DVD, 2004)

PLOT: WOMANIZER ROCK HUDSON (BRAD ALLEN) SPENDS many HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH HIS many lady friends~mostly he says the same "lines and phrases" with all of them just "changes their names" ....Brad shares a "party" line with Jan Marrow (Doris Day ) who is SICK OF never getting to use her "own" phone~

Brad Allen has his "phone lines down perfect" he used the "same phrases and love songs" for all his lovelies he talks too~ he sometimes forgetS their names~most amusing~ ... the other person who is "forced" to share his "party line" is Jan Morrow (Doris Day) as the interior decorator who can NEVER get a call in~ everytime she picks up the phone she hears more maddening tales of love by BRAD~ she turns him into the phone company and he seduces the female phone inspector who investigates the complaint~ the FUN PART IS THE "ARGUMENTS BETWEEN BRAD and Jan about is LOVE HIS life and her LACK of one~

but when BRAD meet the MORE THAN LOVELY "Jan" he falls into a pattern of lies to cover who he really is~ ADD to the total fun is Thelma Ritter as Jan's "eavesdropping" housekeeper who decides that the BEST soap opera is Brads romantic adventures she hears on the phone~ Ritter is GREAT~ AS Brad MOVES FORWARD WITH HIS PLAY to seduce Jan who at the last minute discovers the new man in her life is the SLEAZY PLAYBOY Brad Allen~ WHO SHE CANNOT STAND~ so she dumps HIM....OOOOPS Brad is in love for the first time in his life~

how does Brad get Jan back in his life? he "hires " her to decorate his apartment the result is one FUNNY TACKY NEW "BACHELOR" PAD~ AN OSCAR WAS WON FOR BEST STORY AND SCREEN PLAY~ CLEVER witty dialog and DAY is excellent as the classy but frosty Jan and Hudson is FUN as the clever and just sleazy enough as the playboy bachelor who falls in love with a woman who "CANNOT STAND HIM".

THIS MOVIE MADE DAY AND HUDSON TOP ACTORS FOR THE YEAR ~

I GIVE THIS A SOLID 10 OUT OF 10 FOR ROMANCE AND SPARKLY DIALOG AND ACTING~ ALSO SEE ....That Touch of Mink and Lover Come Back for more Doris Day fun~

The Quintessential Rock Hudson-Doris Day Comedy

Review For: Pillow Talk (DVD, 2004)

Rock Hudson and Doris Day made three romantic comedies together, but the first and greatest of them is Pillow Talk (1959). The cast is excellent and features Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter as Rock's and Doris's sidekicks. The humorous story revolves around Hudson and Day sharing a party line.

If you're too young to know what a party line is, as I was when I first watched this movie, it's a situation in which your phone line and one or more other persons' are the same line. If they're on the phone, you can pick up your receiver and listen to their conversation, and they can do the same to you. Consequently, you can also not use your phone when another person is on the line. This awkward and annoying situation pits straight-laced Doris against ladies' man Hudson, who spends hours on the phone wooing and serenading his many girlfriends.

Rock thinks Doris is the most bothersome woman in the world, until he meets her. He dons a false identity and personality to get close to her, and the two of them fall in love. But what will happen when she realizes he is actually the Casanova on the other end of her party line?

The use of party lines dates this very funny comedy, but the film relies on that plot mechanism and couldn't get by without it. Pillow Talk is a classic, and I highly recommend it.

If you like Pillow Talk and want to see the other two Rock-Doris romantic comedies, they are Lover Come Back (1961) and Send Me No Flowers (1964). You'll probably also like That Touch of Mink (1962), starring Day, Cary Grant, and John Astin.

Romantic Classic

PILLOW TALK is delicious, vaguely innocent, 1950s sexual hi-jinks at the hands of the masters, producer Ross Hunter and his cast, Doris Day, Rock Hudson, and Tony Randall. Doris and Rock share a phone party line, and Doris can't stand Rock's womanizing ways. Randall, in one of his infamous "coded gay" performances as Rock's boss and buddy, is romantically interested in Doris, but is too much of a neurotic wimp for her to be interested. When Randall finds out that Rock has been disguising himself, again in a "coded gay" sub-performance as a Texas millionaire with sexual performance problems, Randall gets the disguised Rock in trouble with Doris, with whom Rock has fallen in love. Thelma Ritter offers a fine supporting performance as Doris's maid. Do not come to this movie expecting THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV or A TALE OF TWO CITIES, or even something as relatively sophisticated as Neil Simon. This is pure mind candy. Enjoy it for what it is.

Excellent, made it easy to find!

I haven't watched it yet, but it is my favorite movie. I have been looking for it for quite sometime. I used to watch movies from this era as I was growing up. I think it is elegant, humorous, great story, etc. I love Rock Hudson, Doris Day and Tony Bennett. There is just something really special about movies like this that were made long ago.

Pillow Talk

Review For: Pillow Talk (DVD, 2004)

They just do not make movies like this any longer. Doris Day, Rock Hudson and Tony Randall are all top notch. Has been a favorite movie for years. I work at a Radiology Center and I am able to take movies in to show in our waiting room. The patients all love this movie.
