A Real DivX DVD Player

The Philips DVP5982 DVD player does something that your DVR and DVD recorders can't do, or can't do very well -- play a DivX file from a DVD or CD with the latest audio and video codecs, and play from a built-in USB port. The 1080p HDVI output plays direct to your upscalr monitor or TV at 1080 lines of resolution, and it plays with little or no distortion and mistimed audio/video problems like most DVD recorders. It seems to handle both DVD+R and DVD-R recodings, and i've played as many as 100 DivX recordings per DVD without a hitch. It has excellent controls and the flexibility to zoom, pan and scan, and do progressive scanning.

For less than $60, you're getting a device which blows away Blu-ray in value. You can see a product as good as any DVD quality viewing with much greater compactness and control. Recorded any Bu-ray DVDs lately?

It's also a sleek, compact, elegant design that goes with any home entertainment system. It's an essential part of the viewing experience. What a bargain!

Philips DVP5982 does a solid job with video and sound

I must admit that I have just received a used unit which is about a year old. I was worried that it would not function or be quirky ... to the contrary. Though the unit is older, it had better reviews than the newer model ... why I do not know. I have used several DVDs and CDs in it so far and the video quality in 1080p upconverting is considerably sharper and crisper than normal DVD mode. In fact the 2x zoom mode in 1080p is about the same quality as standard 480i, which is a good way to fill my entire LG 37" LCD screen. In non-zoom 1080p mode the widescreen image is very clear and sharp. Though I am sure that bluray is sharper, I do not feel it has greater emotional impact ... strictly a discussion for videophiles or for people with 65" screens. It plays many difference video and audio formats, but I have not tested those yet. The standard discs tried so far have not skipped or hesitated, whether they were old or new or from the rental fleet (notoriously problematic).
The sound quality on DVDs and CDs using AV cables through an older analog Harmon Kardon amplifier and JBL speakers is satisfying. I have not yet heard it using a digital cable through my newer Denon amp and NHT speakers, though I expect it will be excellent by comparison.
Honestly, I have excellent eyesight and exceptional hearing, and though I can see and hear the difference in high grade equipment compared to a less expensive unit like this, I would suggest that this unit delivers at least 90% of the reproduction quality of a higher grade $500+ unit (I paid $45). Depending on seeing and hearing acuity, I suspect the average person would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Frankly, in the movie theater, while the sound systems are superb, I have noticed that the giant screen is often grainy and blurry... much, much more so than this unit delivers. I for one am glad to save the money by buying this unit and escaping technology overkill.

Quality DVD player filled with features

This DVD player had everything I needed. It is region free so you can play PAL encoded movies. It also has a USB port from which you can view picture slide shows, play music, or watch videos from a flash drive. Also, it upconverts so standard DVD's look great on an HDTV. This DVD player does pretty much everything. The only thing it lacks is an optical audio output, but it does have HDMI, so if you have a new receiver you are all set. The interface to access the USB drive is not great, but overall this is an excellent product.

Great for those who like to watch DivX w/o burning DVDs

This is my second DVD player used primarily for watching DivX content. The best feature about it, is the USB drive that will read JPEG, MP3 and AVI files off of anything formatted in FAT32. Any flash memory, external hard drives, you name it. Just stick it in the USB and play your movies off of it. VERY HANDY in my opinion. This is compatible with all DivX formats and many other standard video formats. I have used it extensively and have not found anything it would not be able to play yet.

Fast Forwards and Rewindes in up to x32 on AVI files (which i know a lot of other players do not).

This particular model is USB1.1. Meaning it will read from 1.1 or 2.0 device, but will only use 1.1 speed. This HAS NOT caused any delays or pauses in watching for me.

The only significantly annoying feature I found is the fact that if you leave the movie Paused for longer than a few minutes the player turns off and you lose your spot. You will have to fast forward from the beginning.

Otherwise, greately recommended for those who watch a lot of DivX content and don't want to burn DVDs.

Why I bought it on ePay?

I bought one Philips DVP5982 DVD player in Costco. I liked it because of smart combination of technical advantages, such as USB interface and multiple file formats reading/playing.
But unfortunately it did not want to recognize my USB drive, so after searching for the information about problems with file systems I decided to upgrade it's firmware. I went on the site, downloaded a file, burned CD, booted... I followed all instructions thoroughly, but it hung up and did not wake up anymore... I called Philips technical support, but after the conversation they requested to ship the player for repair. They refused to ship me new one in advance, but I needed it ASAP, so I went on eBay and found a similar one (actually, a bit newer player) really cheap: it was refurbished, and works fine, though it still don't read my HDD, but I'm afraid to experiment with upgrades anymore... Probably, I'll buy Panasonic next time.
