Far and away, the most engaging Genesis game I have ever played. D&D players will really enjoy this! The storyline writers did a GREAT job with this one. It is obvious that they worked very hard to prevent the gamer from getting in a rut or comfort zone with the play pattern. Unlike most games of this nature, there is no predicting where this story is going or where it's going to end. There are small accomplishments like finding different destinations and bigger accomplishments like beating a major bad guy or going to a completely different planet! You don't know when the story will lead you to any of these milestones or in what order they will come, but there are so many of them that you NEVER get bored. And there are side stories/missions to keep you even more engaged in the game. You work with up to 5 members of your team that are constantly changing due to parts of the story (another bonus). Each character holds different talents and different levels of these talents. Techniques and Skills of the team can be combined to create even better techniques and skills. And I'm sure there is more that I've missed along the way. Sound confusing? It's not. Easy to understand, story line is easy to follow. You know what your options are and what you need to accomplish at all times. This game was more expensive than most to buy used but I can honestly say, knowing what I know now, I would have paid double and I won't be selling it. There is so much that I can see I could have done differently that I will play it again and find the things I missed the first time around.
I used to have this game a long long time ago, and played it(and played it, and played it...). It had been stolen some twelve years ago, so when I saw this game up for sale, I had to purchase it to relive old memories. This is one of the greatest role-playing games of its time, and is comparable to Final Fantasy III(VI) or Chrono Trigger for the Super NES. The gameplay is easy to pick-up and the graphics for the time were top-notch. There weren't too many RPGs for the Sega Genesis, so this was a must-have for any fan of the genre. The macros and special attacks learned by using them were ground-breaking and very useful, and the story was very engrossing and lllooonnnggg. They give great characterization to the members of your party, similar to FFIII, so you really feel for them. The bosses and monsters are difficult at times, and the ending dungeon is very psychedelic. I highly recommend this for any video game and/or RPG buff. It was worth every penny(At least I didn't pay 90 bucks(!!!) this time, like I did when it was brand new lol)
Phantasy Star is the best RPG series of the entire SEGA 8 bit to 16 bit series and probably the best RPG Sega ever put out. Phantasy star IV is, arguably, the best of the 4. It harkens back, in many ways, to the first Phantasy star, with its cinematic storyline and its strongly Anime style. But it is 10 to 100 times more complicated than the first Phantasy star. It is incredibly fun to play, especially for RPG fans. It loses none of its playability, unlike a lot of the older 16 bit RPGs, which are so clunky to modern gamers that only the die-hard(like me) can truly enjoy them. If you are either an RPG fan, someone interested in the historic high-points of gaming history, or a genesis collector, then you absolutely need this game. Sadly, this game is a bit more expensive than all the other 3 Phantasy Stars--which is due to the general recognition of it's high quality and continuing playability. But if you can find it, even for a moderate price--I recommend you buy it!
Phantasy Star 4 is simply put a must own game for any RPG fan who owns a Genesis. The last in the trilogy and probably the best. The Trilogy of Phantasy star games is 1 2 and 4. Part 3 is a sub story and probably a game that never should of been made. PS4 offer some of the best graphics and sound the genesis has to offer. Its also one of the few non Sega CD based games to offer slide show character art with expressions. If you're looking for a great Genesis rpg go ahead and pick this up. Also you don't need to have played the previous games in the series to play this. However it does throw refference to those for fans of the previous games.
I always put Phantasy Star II for the genesis as my favorite RPG back in the day, that is until Phantasy Star IV made its presence known in 1994. On top of a great story to follow (that also shares bits and pieces of the stories in both Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star II) it is the first genesis RPG to have side missions which just enhances and pushes the gameplay a little further. This game is a must have in any RPG lovers arsonel.
