Editorial reviews

3 stars out of 4 -- "David Twohy, the director, allows creepiness to steal into the film slowly, but soon the jungle shadows seem filled with menace."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (08/05/2009)

"The actors give themselves over to this elaborate game of Clue....Olyphant and Shelton seem to have fun with their roles, and it shows in solid performances..."
Hollywood Reporter - Kirk Honeycutt (08/05/2009)

"Even if you know what's coming, it's a neat bit of meta-thriller filmmaking, as much about the mechanics of storytelling as a reasonably satisfying example of it."
A.V. Club - Scott Tobias (08/06/2009)

"A big-reveal thriller with surprises that really do surprise -- and are well worth waiting for....A PERFECT GETAWAY finds writer-director David Twohy in popcorn form with a muscularity not seen since 2000's PITCH BLACK."
Variety - Dennis Harvey (08/05/2009)

"To Twohy's credit, he does a decent job of keeping you guessing -- and interested..."
Los Angeles Times - Los Angeles Times Critic (08/07/2009)

"In A PERFECT GETAWAY, the path of true love takes a twisted turn when faced with the threat of psychopathic killers on the loose....Lively and slick..."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (08/07/2009)

"A B-movie-style throwback that's consistently diverting and blissfully free of morals and messages....It's a genuinely satisfying cheap thrill."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (08/06/2009)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] high-grade b-thriller....It's sturdy genre fair..."
Box Office - Sara Schieron (08/06/2009)

"[T]he sense of impending doom is palpable. As thrillers go, the film is more nerve-wracking than most, and far better acted -- the four principals are terrific, particularly Jovovich, who gives a really nuanced performance."
Washington Post - John Anderson (08/07/2009)

"Steve Zahn makes full use of the many varieties of hyper in his acting arsenal, while Timothy Olyphant has a heckuva good time telegraphing macho mania."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (08/14/2009)

Review For: A Perfect Getaway (DVD, 2009, Unrated/Rated Versions)

Some JERK said this review was not helpful? HOW? Pls rate pos to offset @$$ hole! Thanks.

Movie begins video image. Newlyweds Cydney and Cliff cruising along Hawaian roads. As he’s driving, she points their nifty new videocamera—at him, at herself, at the ocean and mountains and sky. In between, she looks back at tape already made—wedding guests offering congratulations and encouragement. “I think they just wanted to start off their lives together with some kind of adventure!”

& they do! PAT ATTENTION! The video sets up the movie’s understanding of itself as THEME. The teeny-frame-image with red REC in the corner, the happy-happy couple, etc.

Cydney and Cliff have not seen the same movies 'YOU' have. So at each step of their journey into Kauai’s tourist-ready jungle counts, they run across bad omens they can’t understand. Shopping at a faux-rustic store for supplies, they giggle & hug, while the clerks look vaguely shady. As they pull out, their tire releases a newspaper trapped beneath. Headline “Young Couple Butchered in Honolulu.”

Panic starts as they try to escape unseen, fast-moving assailants. Seen through
nighttime trees, a creepy hitchhiker keeps his face just out of frame.
Cliff and Cydney get a clue, exchanging worried looks as they regret having stopped to pick up another couple (twist!)Cleo & Kale. It's Trouble with a Big T. When Cleo offers up photos of their vacation, recalling Cydney & Cliff’s own devoted self-documentation, Cydney feigns interest in the one showing “us doing the deed in Oahu.”

Cydney looks a little discomfited here, and so the open and prideful display of sex starts to seem a sign of iniquity. No sooner are they rid of the sinister hicks, they meet another sexy body. (Another TWIST!)He appears fortuitously, of course, just as they’re feeling nervous about navigating a very narrow path, and so they’re not unhappy to get help from Nick - (Another TWIST!) a big Iraq war veteran with a big old shrapnel scar in his scalp.

Nick appears either heaven-sent or entirely devious: either way, he helps confuse. Someone in the mountains is killing honeymooners, and he is, as his girlfriend Gina (Kiele Sanchez) says more than once, “really hard to kill.”

Cydney and Cliff see him as heaven-sent, for the time being! If they hang with him, they’ll be protected against killers. Their uncertainties about Nick are confirmed when they meet Gina. She's naked as she sunbathes, She’s been waiting a while for Nick to pop the question. meantime, she admires how he sets up camps, hikes like a pro, and hunts goats, while he’s equally proud of her skills at cutting up farm animals.

Cliff starts to distrust Nick he’s a little too eager to cut things up. Then Cydney announces that Cliff is a “screenplay writer”. Nick’s impressed, and begins tossing out story ideas based on his own life and he’s also seen a lot of movies. He knows what counts as tension and what makes a good action sequence.

Cliff seems unsure of obvious plots. Nick causes surprises that shape the whole movie! Whether or not you believe that he stormed Saddam’s palace, he does tell a good story. Or is it real?

Movie is FANTASTIC. It will miss awards but it was worth seeing. A GREAT STORY. Great Suspence! Unbelievable twists! PAY attention ESPECIALLY to the beach scene 3/4 way through movie and cam corder. You may have to stop and rewind scene. I was like HOLY $hi+!

A slick, well-crafted thriller - Keeps you guessing

I went into this movie with fairly low expectations and came out pleasantly surprised. It's the kind of movie that keeps your brain turning throughout, trying to make you figure out who the killers are before it’s revealed. I won’t get into the plot because that can be found elsewhere (IMDB). There’s some beautiful cinematography and scenery combined with some good dialogue, acting and directing to make one extremely slick and well thought out thriller. I highly recommend this movie if you’re a fan of suspense/thrillers and/or director David Twohy (Pitch Black), Timothy Olyphant (Hitman, The Girl Next Door) or Milla Jovovich (The Fourth Kind, Resident Evil). There’re some pretty good twists and turns that will most likely catch you off guard. There’s very little gore, some language, and some very brief nudity. I’d rate it a solid 7/10. It’s good entertainment and not a bad way of spending 100 minutes of your time.

I LOVE MILLA JOVOICH

I have always LOVED Milla as a actress. I have all of her movies. She's my Favorite buy far next to Jennifer Love Hewitt. I'm 43 years old and after Milla sci fi thrillers, she gets a Action Drama- suspense film. Watched both versions, not much difference, between the 2. Seeing it in blu ray makes you feel like your in Hawai in the jungle. I must admitt, I fiquired it out 1/2 way thru the movie, Great twist 3 times it takes a turn. I really enjoy Milla roles she plays in her films, even her older movies I get a Charge out of them. 10 out of 10. Check out the FOURTH KIND (2010) if your a Milla FAN. You won't be dissapointed!

A PERFECT GETAWAY

Review For: A Perfect Getaway (DVD, 2009, Unrated/Rated Versions)

This is a so-so thriller that makes the audience try to guess who the killer is. I guessed right early on in the film. But, the people I watched it with guessed differently. So, if that sounds fun, you'll enjoy it.
A newley-wed couple {Steve Zahn & Milla Jovovich} go to a remote island on their honeymoon. There they meet another couple Timothy Olyphant & Kiele Sanchez}. Apparently, a killer is on the loose, and the movie turns into a 'who done it?'
The island scenery is breathtaking and the attractive cast play their roles very well. But, when you boil the movie down, the plot is nothing that hasn't been done a thousand times before. It's pretty much eye-candy; an average mystery/thriller.

Review For: A Perfect Getaway (DVD, 2009, Unrated/Rated Versions)

For their honeymoon, newlyweds Cliff and Cydney head to the tropical islands of Hawaii. While journeying through the paradisaical countryside the couple encounters Kale and Cleo, two disgruntled hitchhikers and Nick and Gina, two wild but well-meaning spirits who help guide them through the lush jungles. The picturesque waterfalls and scenic mountainsides quickly give way to terror when Cliff and Cydney learn of a grisly murder that occurred nearby and realize that they're being followed by chance acquaintances that suspiciously fit the description of the killers. "A Perfect Getaway" is nowhere near a perfect movie, but it is certainly a good movie. The majority of the movie centers around paranoia. It is true though that the plot twist can be seen coming from a mile away, but how it is delivered is where it succeeds. How the twist are presented is quite original and chill-inducing. All the actors really give it their best and create believable characters. Overall, it's worth the watch and is ultimately very entertaining with wonderful characters.
