Product Features
  • High-quality, true-to-life image reproduction
The K-r incorporates a new-generation CMOS image sensor with approximately 12.4 effective megapixels to assure high-speed image data readout. It also features the high-performance PRIME (PENTAX Real Image Engine) II imaging engine to ensure accurate and high-speed data processing equal to that of upper-level models. As the result, the K-r produces high-quality images with fine detail, rich gradation and superb rendition, while suppressing annoying digital noise to a minimum. The K-r also offers a wide sensitivity range between ISO 200 and ISO 12800; this range can be expanded from ISO 100 to ISO 25600 via a custom function.
  • Compact, lightweight body
Despite the incorporation of the large image sensor, the K-r sports a compact, lightweight body, thanks to a trim, lightweight stainless-steel chassis, a downsized in-body shake reduction mechanism, and state-of-the-art, high-density packaging technologies that assure space-efficient positioning and layout of the camera components.
  • High-speed continuous shooting at approximately six images per second
The K-r's high-speed continuous shooting mode records as many as 25 images (in JPEG recording format) in a single sequence at a maximum speed of approximately six images per second - the fastest of all entry-class models - allowing the photographer to preserve sharp, crisp images of fast-moving subjects with great ease.
  • High-precision AF system
The K-r's high-precision, wide-frame SAFOX IX autofocus system features 11 sensor points (with nine cross-type sensors positioned in the middle) to assure pinpoint focus on the subject. The K-r is also equipped with a spotbeam projector to assist the AF system in poorly lit locations. The accuracy and speed of contrast AF operation during live view shooting has also been enhanced by the incorporation of a image sensor and drastic upgrading of AF algorithms.
  • Bright, clear optical viewfinder
Thanks to the combination of PENTAX-original finder optics and the renowned natural-bright-matte focusing screen, the K-r's viewfinder offers a bright, clear subject image at 0.85x magnification and with a 96% field of view. Since it assures excellent visibility even in bright outdoor locations and provides delay-free, real-time display of the subject's image, it is especially helpful in shooting where the timing of shutter release is critical, such as sports photography. The in-focus point is indicated as a red point in the viewfinder for at-a-glance confirmation.
  • Large, easy-to-view 3.0-inch LCD monitor with wide-view design
The K-r features a large, high-resolution color LCD monitor with approximately 921,000 dots. Its wide-view design assures a clear view of the monitor image from approximately 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, making it particularly useful in low- and high-angle applications during live view shooting.
  • PENTAX-original SR mechanism for sharp, blur-free images
The K-r features the PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism, which effectively compensates the adverse effect of camera shake by up to approximately four shutter steps. This innovative mechanism extends its benefits to almost all PENTAX interchangeable lenses - even those designed for film-format cameras. Thanks to this user-friendly mechanism, the K-r produces sharp, blur-free images even under demanding conditions prone to camera shake, such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting in the dark without flash illumination, and taking pictures of sunset scenes.

Can NOT Go Wrong with this Camera!

    This camera is simply amazing!

    ·IS/OS/VR/SR in body
    ·Build quality
·1.5x/1.6x crop sensor class leading high ISO low light imaging
    ·Great dynamic range
    ·Excellent array of programmable features
    ·Excellent in camera tools
    ·Excellent details and colors
    ·Quick and responsive
    ·Excellent 11 point AF system
·Up to 12,800 ISO range, usable at max ISO too!
·Great battery life with NiMh and simply amazing on Lithiums!
·LCD color calibration ability for accuracy
·As with all Pentax dSLRs, this body is no different with its very in depth white balance controls
·Distortion and CA correction built in for Pentax DA and DFA lenses
    ·RAW conversion in camera
·In camera HDR ability up to 3 images
    ·Very fast shooting with a 4.7fps capability

    ·Lack of HDMI connector
·Lack of visible AF points in VF
·Can clip highlights in certain scenarios
·Auto white balance under certain artificial light sources is unreliable

This body is about the best bang for the buck dSLR currently on the market. Placed in the total entry level for price point but offering most features of the middle line like the Canon 50/60D and Nikon D90 bodies, but build is not quite as good as those. You really can not go wrong with this camera, especially if you shoot a lot of low light and higher ISO shots and action shots.

    A camara to grow with.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: Pentax K Series K-r 12.4 MP Digital SLR Camera - Black (Body Only)

First some comments on other reviews. One reviewer claims there is a lack of visible AF points. That is simply wrong. Not only are the AF points visible in the viewfinder but you can set the AF point as well. Next, a reviewer claims the AA battery adaptor is expensive. That may be true as the ability to use Lithium or AA (a great plus)is relative but you can buy a cheap one here on EBay for less than $10. This reviewer also claims that the exposure bracketing is limited to 1/3 stops. Not correct. You can set the feature for up to a 3 stop range! Finally a reviewer states that the high end cameras use a CCD sensor rather than a CMOS sensor. I just checked the Nikon $7,000 job and it uses CMOS (albeit full frame size)and their mid-level camera does too but their low end job uses CCD.

You should also know that this camera is just a bit of a power hog. It will get the shots claimed but with all the electronica on the camera your experience may vary. I would suggest a back up battery. They can be had cheap for less than $10.

Now my experience for the last month. This is my first DSLR. I have been happily using Pentax cameras since the early seventies. This summer I went to Europe and I shot over 20 rolls of film with my beloved and unbreakable SF1. After spending hundreds of dollars on processing it was obvious a change to digital was necessary. After months of research I decided on the K-R. You just trust this company. Also, and this is what snagged me, ALL of the old lenses work with this camera and the shake reduction is in-body rather than in the lens. My glass on my SF is superb and I wanted to use these lenses. The K-R "reads" these lenses almost like the new lenses. I think the only thing the DA lenses bring to the table is automatic aberration correction. You can correct the older lenses manually however if you can even notice any aberration

This is a really terrific digital camera, although I still think I like film better (Luddite!). Fit and finish are superb. The burst exposure mode rate is as advertised. I just bought a 32 gig class 10 card (over 3000 shots in full rez!) and was able to blow off over 30+ shots at full rez before it slowed down at all. My photos so far are pretty darn good.

My gripe with this camera though is it is too darn flexible (read complicated). You can reset almost everything and the defaults are not necessarily the most desirable. While the menus are pretty easy to navigate, it has taken a while to finally have all the menus and options where I want. There are so many options that it is imposable to remember where to access them or that they even exist. Constant reference to the user manual is a necessity. I tried to buy a second one from Pentax to use in the field but they tell you to download the PDF version. Of course you can just set the camera to auto picture mode right out of the box and fire away but then why buy a camera that can do so much? On the other hand this is a camera that you can grow with and not worry that next year's model will be significantly better.

My final gripe is that the "Live View" on the LCD screen has a bit of a lag when moving the camera around. I rarely use anything but the viewfinder though.

If you take your photography at least semi-seriously, want great lenses that are backwards compatible (front compatible too as my SF uses the new DA lens with no problem) and want a camera that is really a mid-user DSLR camera at an entry level user price, this is for you.

This is a forgotten DSLR! all canikon users use try out a Pentax ;)

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Excellent camera for any Beginner/Consumer use, Compact design and faster FPS helps to get brilliant photos. In camera edit features are great, HDR is a plus.

If you have some old film era SLR Pentax K Bayonet prime lenses this will be a great way to save lots of money on buying new prime lenses (m42 users are not left behind too there is a adapter for that and if you get the correct adapter you are good!). I think it is the only Camera that supports backward compatibility without a problem. if you have lenses with A setting camera will give you amazing opportunity to get amazing pictures. IQ is way better than some entry level Canon cameras.

my only concern is wished it had more accessories like wireless flash triggers (with AAA batteries not CR2) more auto focus prime lenses that can afford (limited series are expensive) also video recording could have been better, wish it had a HDMI output

Great product & well described in webpage & NO hassles.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Being a budding photographer of no great knowledge of the craft, I wanted to pursue this art as a way of utilizing my spare time in a constructive way. So I checked out Ebay & found this site. I didn't want to spend to much as I didn't know a great deal & I didn't want to buy something shoddy either that I'd regret later on. This sight provided me with all that I needed & the product to date has been excellent. I have absolutely no regrets having dealt with this site & I'm very happy with the products as advertised & received.
