Album Notes
PAST MASTERS VOLUME TWO is a compilation of singles, B-sides and other tracks that did not appear on the Beatles' original British albums. The Beatles as a general rule did not include their singles on their albums in the UK.PAST MASTERS VOLUME TWO is available with PAST MASTERS VOLUME ONE on one cassette on Parlophone (91135).The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion, sound effects): George Harrison (vocals, guitar); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, bass, drums, maracas, sound effects); Ringo Starr (drums).Additional personnel includes: Brian Jones (saxophone); Nicky Hopkins (piano); Billy Preston (organ); Mal Evans (sound effects).Producer: George Martin.Compilation producer: Mark Lewisohn.Recorded between October 16, 1965 and January 4, 1970. Includes liner notes by Mark Lewisohn. All tracks are stereo except "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)."Along with its sister volume, PAST MASTERS 2 gathers singles, oddities and B-sides together and saves the dedicated Beatlemaniac considerable time and money hunting down this uncommon material. Like the "Blue Album," VOLUME TWO covers the second half of the Beatles career from 1965 to 1970. During this time period, the Fab Four stopped touring and focused their energies on studio recordings. The results included some of the Beatles' more experimental forays, like their first use of backwards tape ("Rain") and the breaking of the singles time barrier ("Hey Jude").There are alternate versions of well-known songs ("Get Back," "Across The Universe"), and songs influenced by Fats Domino ("Lady Madonna") and Indian culture ("The Inner Light"). The most unusual tune included on this collection is "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)." This highly unusual recording was started in May 1967 and shelved before getting completed in November 1969. The result was an avant-cabaret number conceived by John Lennon, featuring mumbled vocals, Brian Jones' saxophone playing and sound effects replicating the inside of an after-hours club.

A terrific CD filled with some classic songs!

By 1988, Parlophone, Apple, EMI and Capitol decided that the time was right to start issuing the Beatles' original British-configured albums onto the CD format, plus the American "Magical Mystery Tour" album. For the first time, you could hear the fab four anyplace a CD player could be located. With 33 recordings not included, it was a wise decision to pan these songs out to 2 CDs. This second disc, "Past Masters Volume Two", features the later 15 songs released from 1965 to 1970. The opening songs, "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out" were issued as a single in December 1965, at the same time as "Rubber Soul", though these 2 songs did not appear on that album. Next up are "Paperback Writer" and "Rain", issued as a single in 1966 around the same time as "Revolver". Likewise, these 2 songs were not on that album, either. The first single from 1968, "Lady Madonna" and "The Inner Light", was also the group's last single on the Parlophone and Capitol labels. The Beatles' first single on their new Apple label was "Hey Jude" and "Revolution", released in August 1968. They also released the single of "Get Back" and "Don't Let Me Down" in early 1969. This was followed by "The Ballad Of John And Yoko" and "Old Brown Shoe", from later in 1969. The version of "Across The Universe" included here is the same recording from the charity benefit album "No One's Gonna Change Our World", later to be released in the "Rarities" albums. The single version of "Let It Be" was released in early 1970 with "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" as its B-side. Together, these 15 songs paint a unique portrait of The Beatles' later years. A great CD, including 8 number one hits!

LOVE this Beatles Song Collection!

All the songs selected for this cd are ones I love, and they were B-sides I think which were selected from various singles released in England? Ones from various U.S. albums I suppose. All I know is it's a great group of their songs, and I am glad I bought it; also grateful that Capitol/EMI Records chose to put it together and offer it for sale. I chose not to buy the Vol.1 Past Masters because I didn't like that song list, but this one is delightful--you sing right along to all of them--all hits. Their music was so wonderfully revolutionary and is still timeless today. I was taken by the creative harmonies and even Ringo's drums made a statement! It's like I had forgotten myself how wonderful The Beatles are. I saw them debut on Ed Sullivan show on black & white TV, screaming as a teenager in my parents' living room. How long ago that was :), but their music is forever classic--they are a unique sound.

Past Masters Two-Beatles

Great collection of classic Beatles music. My allowance didn't stretch to buy many singles or albumswhen the Beatles were tops, and I don't have a record player to play those I do have, so I'm replacing the records I do have, and adding the ones I couldn't get back then. The Fab Four will always be FAB!!!!
