haunted house makes no secret of the fact it's not pleased with its new tenants in this independent tale of supernatural horror. Katie (Katie Featherson) and Micah (Micah Sloat) are a twentysomething couple who've just moved into a new home in San Diego, CA. Katie has an interest in the paranormal and believes that malevolent spirits have been following her since childhood, though Micah is not so easily convinced. However, after several nights of loud noises and strange happenings, Micah starts to agree with Katie that some sort of ghost may have followed them to the new home. After a paranormal researcher tells the couple he can't help them, Micah decides to take control of the situation and sets up a battery of video cameras so that if a spirit manifests itself
Remember when you were a wee kid and your big brother used to scare the pants off of you by sneaking around and making a small scary noise or flickering the lights? This movie is a lot like that - it reaches the primal fear in all of us.
I bought this movie because I giess I'm not hip enough to download the torrent and my local video shop does not carry it. I have found as I have gotten older that I am not a real fan of "horror" flicks because I get really annoyed by the MTv style strobe camera work and all the ceaseless gore. This movie has none of that. It is an old fashioned, truly frightening movie that actually gave me goosebumps and slept with the light on that evening.
It is the story a MIcah and Katie, a young couple from San Diego with no apparent source of income, but a really nice middle class house, who are experiencing what Katie calls a reoccurrance of paranormal activity that happend to her as a child of 8 and again some years later. Micah decides that the best way to deal with this activity is to record every minute of their waking and sleeping lives, and let me tell you, things build up.
As far as the production goes, I could find absolutely no fault in the seemingly hand held camera angles. At no point did I feel there was a crew with a boom mike and the rest of the gear. It felt entirely real, and was made more convincingly so by the 2 young actors featured in this film. Their acting felt real, and myself, as a viewer felt genuinely like I was watching their home movies. I was very impressed. The only character that did not ring true was the gentleman who portrayed the medium. He had that Quentin Tarentino-ish gotta-be-a-friend-of-the-oriducer kind of fakeish feeling to him, particularly on his second visit to the house.
No spoilers here though. I would not hesitate to recommend this movie to anyone who wants a good, creepy fright!
This movie is not a gorefest, adn I am glad.
Of course I like this kind of movie anyway. Poltergeist has always been one of my favorite movies but you still know you're watching a production movie made on a set. Of course, with Paranormal Activity, you still know you're watching a movie but it seems very real most of the time. The special effects are just enough to add to that realism and creepiness. Movies don't scare me like they used to but this one definitely makes you want to sleep with the lights on that night.
The main stars, Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat make you feel like you really are watching a couple in the privacy of their own home. This also adds to the realism, however, in my opinion, Katie Featherston fully deserves her Festival Trophy best actress award!!! She is fan-freaking-tastic! Also, she is quite the babe but of course that's just a side note. Her job in this movie is awesome.
If you like movies in this genre, you'll love this movie.
This 2007 independent film (released October 14, 2007) stars Katie Featherston (Mutation) and Micah Sloat (No previous movie experience),
This very low budget film (Reported less than $15,000 to make the movie) grossed over $140 Million Dollars at the box office after receiving high praise at Screamfest Film Festival and Slamdance Film Festival.
The movie is very similar to the The Blair Witch Project in that it uses "found Footage" of a couple that were being haunted by a presence in their home.
This is one of the best Horror films that have ever been made and anyone who loves to be scared to death needs to watch this late at night with someone you can grab hold of to protect yourself.
A very interesting and great movie. Buy this one and keep your kids away from it unless you want them to have nightmares.
Being a horror fan all My life, I really dont get scared of them anymore like I used to. For years with the exception of The Blair Witch Project and Hostel, I just cant get that fear back that i had of horror in the 80s. But that changed with Paranormal Activity. Its considered a found footage movie much like Blair Witch. I know its not real, its the way its made to look real. PA is scary because it focuses on those sounds You hear at night that You cant explain, or those times when Youre alone and You hear every little sound. Paranormal Activity puts a face on all that. I know its inspired alot of found footage films, most of which arent scary. But this is the one to own. PA2 was good, but I wasnt as scared because they used an actress Im very familiar with (Sprague Grayden-Opies wife Donna from Sons Of Anarchy) In order to make these type of films work, You have to use nobodies that seem like real people. However i just saw PA3, and lets just say the fear has returned. DVD is in perfect condition and looks brand new. My thanks to the seller.
