Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewVery Good

  • THE GOOD

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 has fast shooting performance and an extensive feature set.

  • THE BAD

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 has a near-pointless touch screen; no raw capture option; noisy photos; and a short battery life.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 is a very good compact megazoom, as long as you don't mind paying more for features and speedy performance than photo quality.

great

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The Lumix DMC-TZ20 (also known as the DMC-ZS10 in the USA) is Panasonic’s latest range-topping travel-zoom camera, featuring a 16x, 24-384mm lens, built-in GPS geo-tagging, 3D Photo Mode and a touchscreen LCD. Successor to the TZ10 model, the DMC-TZ20 has a new 14.1 megapixel MOS sensor which enables full 1080i HD movies in the AVCHD format and fast continuous shooting at either 10fps or 5ps with continuous auto-focus turned on. A built-in GPS unit tracks where each photo is taken, automatically embedding the latitude and longitude in the EXIF data and also now including landmark information from over 1 million locations. The Intelligent Resolution function can be used to digitally boost the zoom ratio to 21x without hardly any loss in quality, or to simply make still images and video look better, at least according to Panasonic. The TZ20 also implements A, S and M exposure modes for creative photographers, in addition to Intelligent Auto and a variety of scene modes for beginners. An upgraded Sonic Speed auto-focus system, high-speed and high-performance Venus Engine FHD processor, POWER O.I.S. anti-shake system and a 3-inch touch-sensitive LCD screen with 460k dots complete the headline specifications. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 / ZS10 is available in silver, black, red or blue for £349 / $399.

Ease of Use

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 is very similar to its predecessor, the DMC-TZ10, in terms of its design, with the most notable difference being the relocation of the one-touch Movie Record button from the rear of the camera to the top. At first glance the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 strikes you as being a little large, elongated and bulky, but it's virtually the same size and weight as the previous TZ7 model. You then have to remind yourself that Panasonic have somehow now fitted in a 16x zoom lens, equivalent to 24-384mm on a 35mm camera, which provides a very versatile focal range that will cover every subject from ultra-wide angle landscapes to close-up action shots. Even when set to 384mm, the lens doesn't extend too far from the front of the TZ20, making it look to all intents and purposes like a "normal" compact camera. This helps to make the DMC-TZ20 great for candid moments, as people assume that you're using just a standard point and shoot with a much more limited range.

The 24mm focal length provides an entirely new wide angle of view that can only increase your creativity. You won't want to go back to a "standard" 35mm zoom, or even a 28mm one, after using the 24mm lens on the DMC-TZ20 - 3mm at the wide-angle end really does make a big difference. The 16x zoom lens makes this one of the most versatile compacts in terms of focal range, especially as it is coupled with Panasonic's excellent POWER O.I.S system, which helps to ensure that the majority of photos taken in good light are sharp. The TZ20's lens isn't particularly fast at either the wide-angle setting, with a maximum aperture of f/3.3, or the telephoto setting, with a maximum aperture of f/5.9, but given the focal range on offer, we feel this is a compromise worth making.

The DMC-TZ20 is a well-built camera with a high quality metal body. The design is dominated by the 16x lens on the front and the large 3 inch LCD screen on the rear. There is no optical viewfinder, which does make the camera a little harder to keep steady at the telephoto end of the zoom than holding it up to your eye. There is only a shiny, smooth handgrip on the front of the TZ20

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

very good camera in the LUMIX line. excelente resolution and angle of shooting in a smaller size. GPS System option ok but not indispenssable practice. touchscreen fluid. average battery life. I recommend this product for people with a fairly good command of compacts and also to those who hesitated to switch to SLR.overall this is an excellent product from Panasonic very reliable.

Incredible feature packed pocket camera; great options & pictures quality.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is an incredible "little" camera. It rivals SLRs for quality and beats the heck out of them for convenience. It fits neatly into a shirt pocket or purse. It has incredible features and fine resolution. With this camera your only limitations seems to be your imagination. I bought it because of features like 16X optical zoom, HD & slow motion video and 14 mega pixel resolution. It is ready to shoot very quickly; no shots missed waiting for the camera to start up. I've owned a Konica Minolta and a Lumix DMC TZ3, both good cameras, but this one tops them both with ease. Things like much higer zoom, more resolution and more and better options. I'm still trying to learn all the options that are available, as it seems that Panasonic has thought of just about everything. Happily it can be used immediately, even by a very inexperienced photographer and I beleive even a professional photographer would be impressed with this pocket camera. My one dislike is how slow the GPS function is if you don't leave it turned on,

great superzoom point and shoot!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

a really terrific point and shoot. I bought it since we were going on a bike and barge trip in Europe and needed small size, speed, portability. Camera was terrific --- great pix; easy to use and long battery life -- i bought an extra battery and just kept switching when needed. Not great in low light but i used the auto setting mostly. BTW, great buy on ebay as the camera is usually over $400 and I paid $245!!!!

So much in a point and shoot!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

So much packed into such a small size! I've been looking for some time, my brother told me about this camera in an earlier version that he is taking to Africa. I am still learning some of the features, but it is the only point and shoot with the optical zoom capability I've found.
