Superb HD video; a raft of frame-rate choices; supports solid-state P2 media as well as tape; terrific, relatively wide-angle lens.
Steep learning curve; noninterchangeable lens; low-res viewfinder and LCD; heavy for handheld shooting.
With its AG-HVX200, Panasonic raises the bar again, bringing us professional HD versatility and quality at a lower price than ever.

This is a great camera. Versatile for live shooting to studio settings. Only drawback is that it doesnt do as well under low light conditions. It has a varied amount of formats and the ability to record on P2 cards or tape. It is quite heavy to use as is and your wrists will get tired, so you definately will benefit form a shoulder mount/stabilizer or using it on a tripod.
The hvx200 or hvx200p is an discontinued older model. Make sure you don't fall for the switch and bait tactics some ebay sellers use thinking you will never know the difference, which was pulled on me when I was looking for a hvx200a. It's very easy to tell, just look underneath the viewfinder- it clearly states what model it is. If it dosn't state hvx200a its a older model or one from overseas.
You should be able to pick up a hvx200 old model for around $1000 to $1400 of of ebay used. Of course with p2 cards and extra accessories the price goes up. The hvx200 model is a decent model for hdv standards, way above consumer models. However at this time and age its behind in picture quality, low light and technology in comparison to todays proconsumer/pro models. That's one of the reason why panasonic discontinued it with the predessor hvx200a model which has a updated ccd chips, low light, color and noise improvement. If you had to choose bettween the two models the hvx200a would be the better choice.
Issues on the hvx200 older model was battery tabs (plastic breaking off), input/output jacks were consider plastic flimsy, and low light noise. If you need more info on the hvx200a's improvements start with the forums. There's plenty covered there.
If you are going to bid over $2000, don't waste your time on the older model. You could get the newer model with basic acessories at that price. Remember acesssories jacks up the price- p2 cards are still pricy. Just keep your eyes peeled on ebay. A lot of users have made the switch.
The current panasonic line for this model is as of now hvx200a, hpx170 (which has no mini dv compartment, but greatly improves on pro functions, inputs and outputs). Don't let anyone tell you the picture quality for the models are the same for the old model vs new. Too many blogs and pro users beg the differ.
This is not the first time I've bought the Panasonic AG HVX200, now I have three of them! I think they are great, & the best bang for the buck. The only weaknesses are that they don't zoom in quite as much as most cameras, & they don't do well in low lighting situations.
This camera is a solid investment. With the purchase of the lens adapter and additional lenses this camera gives a high production value result.
Currently this camera is used on television shows. Not just reality shows but in studio as well.
I got this camcorder because I'm in the need for a high end HD camera for some gigs.I'm really familiar with it because it was the one I use in college and it's easier for me to start working on some gigs with it, than get a new one that I don't know.In my opinion it's an amazing professional HD camcorder, easy to use and with the HD quality you an get in any other brand camcorder at a better price.
