This tablet will exceed your expectations if think it is only an E-reader. The Android OS may make you think it has more to offer then it actually does. I got mine new for just over $50 so that shifts my stars to the right for price and value.
The upside is it has a browser so you can access the internet from a WiFi hot spot. The down side is w/o user modification it will only attach to 'open' networks. If you have an Ad Hoc network at home you won't be able to use it. You can set up open access at home but it would make it easy for people to leech off your internet connection. Checking Facebook from a McDonald's with WiFi? a piece of cake. It would be a 5 star review if you could hook it up to WEP or WPA networks w/o having to root it.
Getting Android APKs to run can be just a bit difficult. The Novel has its own market with a number of games and applications on it. You can still use the browser to download applications from the official Google site to the tablet and then install from there. Once installed on the Novel, lot's of games and applications run fine.
The Novel functions well as a multimedia device. Works much better then a simple MP3 player and the screen is just large enough to make watching videos fun. I've hooked mine up to my home stereo and it performs well. Viewing pictures is first rate.
The device works exactly like a USB thumb drive when you hook it up to your laptop or desktop. Since it takes an SD card for memory expansion, you can also use it as an SD card reader. Likewise if you have a SD card reader/writer, you can transfer files to your Novel that way.
The book reader as another reviewer has said is a bit unresponsive to flipping the page and sometimes gives undesired results. This goes beyond the normal insensitivity you would expect from a resistive touch screen. A number of classic novels are available for download and the reader has full graphic capability for illustrated novels.
The Android/MP3 stuff you will miss are: No camera, obviously it won't function as a phone, no way to hook up an external keyboard or mouse, and no FM radio.
I bought this for my two young daughters as a starter tablet. I did not like the touch screen, the way it felt. Also I wasn't able to download any apps from the pre-installed app store. I kept recieving numorous errors. I ordered two and had the same problem with both.
This was a gift that I requested. I upgraded from pandigital enovel 6 in to this one. I like the color and touch screen. This is the only brand reader I have purchased so I can have nothing to compare it to.
Very slow , NOT user friendly. Altho it is a great size, it falls short in user friendlieness. The battery has a shorter life then most tablets. Its also hard to get it onto the wifi.
I purchased this Pandigital ereader as a spare for my grand daughter in case she broke her original I'd gotten her. I think it is a great product for the price. So much so that it is the fourth one (4th) I'd purchased, one for each of us plus the spare.
My daughter, grand daughter and I love to read and this is a perfect ereader to use. The only thing I have issue with regarding this ereader is that sometimes the pages are a little slow in changing. That's a small matter though. I still like it and think it is well worth the money.
