IT'S THE CRAZIEST MIX-UP EVER! (GOLDIE HAWN) AND (KURT RUSSELL) DAZZLE THE SCREEN IN THE BUOYANT SCREWBALL COMEDY OF MEMORY-MAKING AND MEMORY-FAKING. ONE OF HOLLYWOOD'S MOST DYNAMIC SCREEN PAIRS,(HAWN) AND (RUSSELL) MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY HILARIOUS SITUATION IN THIS DELIGHTFUL RICHES-TO-RAGS ROMANCE THAT'S PERFECT ENTERTAINMENT FOR ANYONE WHO APPERICATES A GREAT PRACTICAL JOKE.(HAWN) IS JOANNA STAYTON, THE PAMPERED WIFE OF A PRETENTTIOUS,YACHT-OWNING SOCIALITE. WHEN THEIR BOAT GETS STUCK FOR REPAIRS,JOANNA EMPLOYS CARPENTER DEAN PROFITT (RUSSELL) TO IMPROVE HER CLOSET SPACE. BUT WHEN DEAN ASKS TO BE PAID,HE'S BLATANTLY TURNED DOWN BY THE "NOTHING IS EVER GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME" JOANNA. SO WHEN JOANNA FALLS OVERBOARD AND GETS A BAD CASE OF AMNESIA,DEAN TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE SITUATION AND,IN A STROKE OF RETRIBUTIVE GENIUS, TELLS HER THAT'S SHE'S HIS WIFE AND THE MOTHER OF HIS FOUR UNRULY CHILDREN!
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are marvelous in "Overboard." She plays the rich bitch to the hilt, and I burst out laughing several times during the tirade that she provides while he is trying to please her unsuccessfully with his carpentry skills.
Then the situation reverses itself when she loses her memory when falling overboard the tremendous yacht that you think is owned by her husband. Kurt Russell is just as funny as he claims that Goldie is the mother of his rowdy children and caretaker of the raunchy home where he lives. It is hilarious!
This is a movie that is fine for all ages. You will forget all your troubles and go overboard in laughter. And the twist at the end makes it even more fun. This is absolutely one of my all-time favorite comedies--right up there with "Mr. Mom."
Anyone who has ever dealt with the super rich can appreciate and understand this movie. Dean Prophet (Kurt Russell) is a carpenter in a small Northwest fishing village. He is a widower and has four or five misbehaved boys that have no manners or courtesy. They are bad! Summoned to her yacht while it is being serviced, Joanna (Goldie Hawn) instructs Prophet to build her a new closet in her stateroom. He does so but she refuses to pay saying that it was not to her liking. She then throws both him and his tools into the water as her yacht is leaving. Later that night little Miss Priss falls overboard and is rescued by a garbage scow. She is brought ashore with amnesia. She has no idea who she is or where she is from. Her husband who is a real piece of work comes to claim her, but when he realizes she has no memory, he leaves here there. Dean Prophet sees her on TV and goes down to claim her as his wife for payback. Over the next months she is cook, housekeeper, mom, and everything else. Dean is actually falling in love with her, but can't tell her that he is just taking advantage of her. This is a cute movie and is really funny. Suddenly when Joanna and Dean realize that they are in love, she regains her memory. Back on the yacht with her husband she realizes that she wants Dean and the kids back. Funny movie.
After watching a re-run of this movie on TV the umpteenth millionth time, this time with my elementary-aged kids, I decided it was time to cough up and buy the DVD. There aren't many movies the entire family ranging from diapers to grandma can sit down and enjoy watching together time after time, but this is definitely one of them. And as any frazzled Mom (and a few Dad's) can tell you, we can all relate to Goldie Hawn catatonically muttering "ba, ba-ba-bah, ba-ba-bah" on the couch after a day home with the little angels. No matter how many time you watch it, this movie is hilarious!!!
The 2009 release is nice because, unlike the grainy old version usually beamed over the airwaves, this one has been digitally cleaned up for a crystal clear picture and good sound quality.
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell star in Garry Marshall's
1987 romantic comedy. A carpenter uses a snobby
rich woman with amnesia and falls for her. I grew
up watching this and always liked it. Goldie and
Kurt are great together and this dvd has decent
picture and sound, but only the trailer. Get
this good film.
