Album Notes
Buddy Holly & The Crickets: Buddy Holly (vocals, guitar); Niki Sullivan (guitar); Joe B. Mauldin (bass); Jerry Allison (drums).Producer: Norman Petty.Compilation producer: Steve Hoffman.Principally recorded in Clovis, New Mexico in 1957 and 1958.Digitally remastered by Steve Hoffman.Personnel: Buddy Holly (vocals, guitar); Jerry Allison (drums).Audio Remasterer: Steve Hoffman.MCA got serious about reissuing vintage music from its library in the 1980s, when it put the responsibility in the hands of producer Steve Hoffman, who was willing to spend the time and do the research required to find the right masters and also to propose doing right by them. One of the first results was For the First Time Anywhere, which unearthed a lot of previously unheard undubbed Holly demos, and Hoffman followed it up two years later with From the Original Master Tapes, the first Buddy Holly collection that was a revelation for its sound quality. Although it has been outdone in that department since, what with the advancement of digital technology and its uses, and there are compilations that take into account songs of his that became important in others' hands, this remains the best single-disc collection of Buddy Holly's music, featuring 20 of his biggest hits. The songs aren't presented in chronological order, but the disc flows well, running through every one of his hits and all of his best-known songs -- "That'll Be the Day," "Peggy Sue," "Oh, Boy!," "Maybe Baby," "Rave On," "Think It Over," "Heartbeat," "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," "Everyday," "Not Fade Away," "Well ... All Right," and many others. A few terrific songs are missing, but From the Original Master Tapes remains a first-rate introduction and a nearly definitive summary of the highlights of Holly's brief recording career. ~ Bruce Eder & Stephen Thomas Erlewine

If you are lucky...

Created: 06/25/07
If you are lucky, you have the original 1985 1st pressing of this disc. Not only does this rare and OOP version contain the fantastic studio chatter leading into the gorgeous true stereo sound of track 20, but it also contains a count-in of "One, two, two" by the producer on track 19, another true stereo gem! And I didn't type the quote wrong. To my knowledge subsequent pressings do not have this erroneous count-in on track 19, only the 1st pressing. (I know several other fans who have this CD and their copy does not have the chatter on track 19.) The sound quality of the CD is superb! On tracks 19 and 20, with headphones on, you feel as if you are in the studio with Buddy and the musicians! Tracks 1 through 18 are mono and not as spectacular as hearing the studio ambience on the stereo cuts, but they sound great anyway. The only thing that keeps this CD from being absolutely faultless is the peculiar omission of two true stereo gems, "Raining In my Heart" which is available on a separate MCA CD titled "Vintage Music - Volumes 5 & 6". It too has the producer's count-in, but this time, he correctly counts to three! Also, track 18 "Reminiscing" is in mono on this disc, but it can be found in true stereo on another MCA CD titled "Vintage Music - Volume 17 & 18. Why the stereo master wasn't used here is unclear. Perhaps it hadn't been discovered and remastered at the time this disc was made. Anyway, "if" MCA would have included "Raining In My Heart" in stereo as track 21 on this CD and "if" they would have issued track 18 "Reminiscing" in stereo rather than mono, this CD would have been simply perfect! How much luckier can you get?

All of Buddy's great songs on one CD that won't break the bank. The studio chat on True Love Ways is neat, and one of Buddy's 1956 Decca session recordings appears on this disc too (Rock Around with Ollie Vee). Burned a copy to play and put the original back in it's case and in the CD rack.

I always loved buddy holly. Loved the songs on it. I would suggest for anyone to buy it. The price is really great too. I'm glad they are making some of the old songs on cd so everyone can enjoy what we used to love to listen too.
