Because that’s the only piece of advice I can give to you before watching the following film. Following a three-year hiatus from the director’s chair, Italian horror master Dario Argento returns with the most fiercely striking thriller of his career.
Up-and-coming opera singer Betty (Cristina Marsillach) becomes an overnight sensation as the lead in an avant-garde presentation of Verdi’s Macbeth. Nevertheless, Betty soon causes the sanity of a demented fan who constantly forces her to watch the fierce murders of her friends and colleagues. Can the diva unmask the killer’s identity in time before she becomes the final victim?
Ambitious and artistically stylish, “Opera” would combine the sexually disquieting subtexts of “Deep Red” and “Tenebre” with the over-the-top murder set-pieces of “Suspiria” and “Inferno”. Black humor would play a principal component into the Argento canon due to the infamous peephole scene. While the radiant Marsillach excels as the key lead, Urbano Barberini is given meatier scenes to show his underrated skills as an actor. His perplexing performance doesn’t come off as stiff and rigid as his role in “Demons”, but the character Urbano plays is given another crucial layer as the running time progresses.
“Opera” would mark a turning point in Argento’s career. The production was affected by real-life disasters that were triggered by the invented traditional "curse" on the Shakespearean play. Also, it would be the last film, after 5 collaborations, with his long-time girlfriend and collaborator Daria Nicolodi.
Despite these setbacks, “Opera” is indeed another horror classic with another great soundtrack from Claudio Simonetti.
IF YOU LOVE DARIO ARGENTO'S FILM'S OR JUST COLLECT THEM, THEN YOU MUST HAVE THIS ONE. THIS IS A GREAT THRILLER, WITH GORE. I LIKED THIS MOVIE ALTHOUGH, I THOUGHT I COULD BE BETTER. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MOVIES WERE YOU SCREAM AT THE T.V. AND SAY HOW COULD SOMEONE BE THAT STUPID. BUT IT WAS FREAKY AND FOR A 80'S MOVIE, IT HAD SOME GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS! I RECOMMEND IT! IF YOU LIKE A GOOD THRILLER WITH SOME GORE, THEN BUY IT! DID THIS HELP?
what can I say dario argento rules. opera is an excellent horror movie just like all of dARIOS MOVIES. I recommend checking him out if your into horror. you wont be disapointed.
It is good and scary i like the story line of the movie and i love Dario Argento.
If you like horror this for you.
Love this movie. Until a Blu-Ray becomes available, this is the best version available. I love having something different like a soundtrack CD as a bonus instead of EPK interviews or other nonsense.
