England's Beat Goes On imprint digs into the Sony vaults to re-release two signature Earth Wind & Fire albums on this double-disc set. While EWF eventually scored big internationally, it took a little longer outside the United States -- they didn't crack the U.K. Top 20 until 1977!
In any case, Open Our Eyes, the group's second Columbia album (Head for the Sky preceeded it) was released in the middle of 1974. Recorded at the prestigious Caribous Ranch recording studio in Nederlands, CO, it was produced by bandleader Maurice White and Chicago legend Charles Stepney. It netted them their first Top 40 single (number 29) in the album's opening track "Mighty, Mighty," though it took a while to place at radio. The album added two more singles to the Billboard Hot 100 with "Kalimba Story," which stalled at number 55 (though it went to number six on the R&B chart), and "Devotion," composed by White with Phillip Bailey, which climbed to number 33. The album ended up at number 15 on the pop album chart, clearly crossing over to white audiences, which was one of the many lofty goals EWF had set for themselves -- they wanted to be a band that everybody listened to.
The second disc in this collection is the monumentally successful That's the Way of the World, (also co-produced by White and Stepney and recorded at Caribou), from 1975. It was actually, the soundtrack album (though it's not billed that way) to Sig Shore's film of the same name. The band jumped at the chance to play themselves in the film, given Shore's previous successes like Superfly. The film, which flopped at the box office, also starred Harvey Keitel. The album's first single, "Shining Star," topped the pop and R&B charts and the second single, the title track, came close, The album -- which also went to number one and was the first album/single combination by an R&B group to accomplish such a feat -- -went multi-platinum, establishing a very successful run for the band, eventually hauling Open Our Eyes to platinum status as well. It also pushed the group to rush, record, and release a live album later in 1975, called Gratitude, that would be their most successful album ever. Strictly speaking, this is one killer package to own, with great liners by Michael Heatley, and excellent remastered sound. ~ Thom Jurek
