I purchased the CD "Blues Image" about a month ago. I was curious about it because the hit single off this recording, "Ride Captain Ride", has very cool lead guitar work on it. I liked the overall performance, the lyrics &, from a technical standpoint, the recording is clear & mixed perfectly. It is very well produced. Also, I recall reading a comment made by no less than Jimmy Page stating his opinion of this album.
It made me curious about this band. Came to find out that Mike Pinera is the person responsible for the lead guitar work. Joe Lala was also a member of this band. He is a world class percussionist and has played on numerous recording sessions as well as touring with Stephen Stills & others.
I was not disappointed. This is a band of very accomplished musicians. I like all the tracks on this CD with the exception of Mose Allison's "Parchman Farm". That piece has been done to death. No one could do a better job on it than Mose anyway, so why even try?
But Blues Image does a great version of "La Bamba". They give it a Cuban influence rather than the Mexican influence given this song by the great Richie Valens. Or the alternative, even more traditional arrangement by Los Lobos. I love both of those versions, but Blues Image brings something different to the table.
If you are looking for a band of fine musicians circa late 60's early 70's who put out a very enjoyable, listenable album with catchy music, stellar musicianship & fine production, this is the one.
