"Aside from a debatably useful 26x zoom lens, there's little that's notable about the Olympus SP-590 UZ."

This camera replaces a stolen Olympus C725 before that I was a high end 35mm user. This Sp-590uz is great for beginner or Pro users, easy point a click pictures or manual settings your choice. Many preset setups for different types of pictures makes it almost fool proof. You can even add lenses to it for super wide angle or telephoto, I added a glass cover to protech the LCD screen, and a camera bag is on the way to hold the extra lenses, camera and battery charger with extra batteries. You can't go wrong with camera.
This is the third Olympus camera I've purchased in their SP series and probably the last to come with an electronic viewfinder. Each succeeding model has represented an improvement in performance and features and that is true with this model. Image quality is outstanding and the improvement in noise reduction was a relief for someone who does a lot of available light photography. Color rendering remained as warm as previous models, but that's not always a bad thing. It's a big camera and a little on the heavy side, but I like the feel of it's rugged metal body. This model came with an adapter(usable only with late model xd types) to accept micro sd memory cards so you don't have to worry about searching for the defunct xd cards. This is a good value with dependable Olympus quality that I would buy again.
An amazing camera. A little complicated, but by hands on trial and error can soon become a real pleasure. I love the 26X zoom, the micro/marco, and the scenic selections. This camera has a lot of extras lacking in sevral, more expensive models. I find no problem with the weight, or placement of dials. The screen is very good. I would recommend a tripod for some shots. The aperature and shutter settings have thus far been quite responsive. On the special shots it is a tad slow, but well worth the wait. A remote shutter release would also be a welcome purchase if you plan to go a lot of shooting.
I purchased this camera to replace the same model which I have been using for several years, but dropped and broke. I really like the zoom range and all the features, menu options, etc. It uses the xD card so I can switch with my Olympus E-330 SLR. Two things are annoying: the lans cap is loose fitting (necessary due to the lens action) but there is no way to secure it other than the cord, which leaves it hanging in the way;it would also be nice to use a single rechargeable battery rather than the four AA's.
I have used the camera for a couple of weeks now and have taken several hundred pics. I use the camera mainly for hiking. The powerful zoom lens makes it easy to get close up pics of wildlife without having to get too close. Having remote and time lapse capabilities means I can set up the camera and then back off to a point where my presence doesn't affect their behavior. It takes great quality pics. Nice and sharp with accurate color. I have the olympus sp800, which has a higher power zoom and higher megapixal count. But it doesn't have remote capabilities and didn't like the fact it had no viewfinder, just the screen. Being able to sight through the viewfinder means it is easier to stabilize the camera when using the zoom. The picture quality (12meg vs 14meg) is the same as far as I can determine when comparing same pics under high zoom.
