Product description
Product Information
The PEN E-PL2 continues the PEN family's legacy of a small, light and simple design, intuitive interface and DSLR image quality and expands your creative potential with lens technology, live guide, in-camera creative features, auxiliary lenses, a close-up spotlight accessory for macro photography and the Olympus PENPAL Bluetooth accessory. And the newly designed E-PL2's ergonomic body makes capturing amazing still images and HD video more fun than ever before. The E-PL2 comes with the Movie and Still Compatible (MSC) ED m14-42mm f3.5/5.6 zoom lens. This kit lens has a smooth, silent and quick inner focus mechanism to make it exceptionally fast and nearly silent when recording high-definition movie. The PEN E-PL2's live guide system takes the guesswork out of great photography and videography by allowing you to preview effects at the touch of a button. Want more vivid or muted color in your shot? Want warmer or cooler color? Want a brighter or darker subject, or a sharper or softer background? Simply select live guide and turn the wheel on the back of the camera to slide through numerous photographic and videographic effects. Make adjustments and watch the LCD as the effects are made live - before the image is captured! The E-PL2 provides an overall excellent user experience with a large, easy-to-view 3.0-inch 460,000-dot high-resolution LCD monitor and a control dial. Olympus appreciates that you may not have hours to spend retouching your images on the computer. The E-PL2 has improved art filters with art filter variations that allow users to customize each filter with different moods and effects and an art effect function to add various composition effects to the picture. Six art filters are incorporated including the dramatic tone filter. With the E-PL2's multiple exposure you can shoot one shot, then another and combine them in real time, or capture both shots separately and combine them within the camera later. At the heart of the E-PL2 is a large-size image sensor. This big sensor is inside the much smaller body of the E-PL2. This high-performance 12.3-megapixel live MOS image sensor delivers excellent dynamic range, accurate color fidelity, and state-of-the-art technology to reduce noise and capture fine image details in both highlight and shadow areas.Recording HD movies with the E-PL2 is simple thanks to an easy-to-reach one-touch record button on the back of the camera body. If you're about to snap a photo and you realize a video would capture the spirit of the scene even better, simply press the record button and instantly you're capturing videos! Easily toggle back and forth between capturing stills and video by using your index finger to press the shutter button or your thumb to press the red record button. Having the ability to shoot still images and videos opens up a world of imaging possibilities.

Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewVery Good

The E-PL2 delivers excellent photo quality, with an extremely customizable interface.

Performance has improved, but the E-PL2 still couldn't be classified as fast overall.

A great interchangeable-lens model if you're looking for better photo quality and/or a more advanced feature set than your current point-and-shoot offers, the Olympus PEN E-PL2 still doesn't satisfy for photographing active kids and pets.

Review For: Olympus PEN E-PL2 12.3 MP Digital Camera - Black (Kit w/ 14mm-42mm Lens)

Very easy to use. Intuitive menus. Shoot only in RAW and have had great results. Excellent low-light capabilities. bought this product because I also have other 4/3 cameras, and wanted to be able to switch back and forth with lenses. External flash options are limited, but that is a minor issue.

Graet value, very fun to use and take amazing pictures the easy way.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

With this camera I am taking the most amazing pictures without being an expert using its manual settings. All the automatic settings and art features are so easy to use and I am actually taking professional level pictures just by learning to use them.

This camera is very fun to use too and is very good looking. Over all I LOVE it!

    Best value for money...

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Compared to my wife's canon s95

Pros - The picture quality superb compared to point and shoot like canon s95 no contest, the noise and the background blur is much better due to bigger sensor and the iAuto is just super jpegs come just as i like colorful and well exposed, the autofocus is faster and accurate, sharpness is good, build quality is good (feels like a metal in hands but it is not)...

Cons - The overall speed of processing is little bit slower and the art filters like diorama lags little bit and it is much heavier than i thought with 14-42mm II lens,
the biggest drawback is the lack of focus assist light so autofocusing in dark is almost impossible

    Compared to my Nikon D80

Pros - little size and don't draw much attention just i want for street shooting and the jpegs is good as Nikon D80 dslr wich is very good and comparable because D80 is almost 6 year old dslr, in body image stabilization is a very good feature, with a slow lens like 14-42mm you can take blur free photos in low light it works better than Nikons 18-55mm VR i think

Cons - lowest iso of 200 is little bit odd, want 100, the noise exists in every iso beginning from iso 200, the performance speed is slow not the autofocus, heavy, cannot get much background blor or Swallow DoF,

Conclution : for me it is the best value for money it is cheap, built well, offers good photos like dslr, not complicated like a dslr, with panasonic 20mm f1.7 it is the best street camera for me, i think all the pen series is, at this time it is the best value for money i think you can't go wrong for 480$...

Amazing, especially for a Micro 4/3!

This is an excellent camera, as is Panasonic's equivelant offering. Video is superb! IQ is amazing, especially when considering it is a Micro 4/3 sensor! Very reminiscent of the old Rangefinders IMHO. I never cared for the 4/3 sensor systems nor the original Micro 4/3 sensor systems, but the latest from Olympus and Panasonic have really turned my opinion around! Until the Pen series I couldn't stand shooting with anything Olympus to be frank! But this camera is nothing but pleasure! Great for weddings, street shooting, PJ type work even, etc. Great carry around camera when a dSLR is just too big and bulky! I am truly impressed by this camera!
