Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewVery Good

  • THE GOOD

"Excellent build quality; very good photo quality; can shoot raw+JPEG in every mode, including Art Filters and iAuto."

  • THE BAD

"Slow, with sluggish autofocus; short battery life; low-resolution LCD."

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

"Reasonably priced for an interchangeable-lens model, with the same high-quality photos of its siblings, the E-PL1 nevertheless suffers from slow performance that makes it a poor choice for snapshooters looking to upgrade."

Pen World micro 4/3s Get bit.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Bought it cause I had Pen cameras back when they were film cameras and I had some Leica Lenses lying kinda idle. The price was really nice cause for what I payed for it , refurbished by Olympus, I would've only bought a next to plain vanilla point and shooter.Instead I got a system camera with a sensor that is several times bigger than your run of the mill ps. I also had PenF Lenses , M42 Pentaxes, Zeniths, Pentacons,Petris,Mirandas,Soligors, and Nikons and Leica Rs and 4/3s and Contaxes, Rolleis, and many more which now become alive again.
The camera itself even has HD video modes.A fine tuning for focusing-sharp feature that allows you to put focus where you really want it and the system lenses are no slouchers either. They are engineered to be mercifully small and awesomely sharp and color corrected. So, u get a computer controlled camera and a powerful computer at that that lets you tweak, in camera, your jpegs, and copy them also in camera. I am still not even half way figuring out the features cause of the profusion of them and their depths. Even if it breaks just past the year warranty the manufacturer bestows u are still a winner with this gizmo.Just buy the extended warranty and the cheap adapters for other lens bayonets and you will have eons of fun exploring what your old stowed away lenses can still do .
The camera itself , bodywise , is a sturdy package that includes a folding pop up flash that is fudgeable for indirect fill-ins.You will love this camera.

Great.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I purchased this camera body used. This is an excellent camera for the advanced novice offering program, aperture, shutter and manual priority modes plus programmed "Art" modes. One can achieve professional results without the expense. I purchased this camera so I could use my amazing Pentax-110 series lenses and off camera flash units. The Pentax lens/Olympus body/Vivatar flash combinations gave outstanding results, blown up to 8X11 on an Epson 300M 6color printer using premium glossy paper. Photography is fun again.

quality shots with out the mirror

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Just needed one for research on some of my new product lines. I sell optical parts for microscope cameras. The camera is quite impressive. This may sound funny but I wish I could also take very low pixel shots on the camera but I believe the lowest you can go is 1 megapixel. Besides that, an excellent product; Very happy.

Olympus quality in a very small. versitile, and usable package

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I picked up this PEN PL1 because I am familiar with Oly's quality. This is not just an average point and shoot camera although it works like one. This has the power and interchangeable lenses to provide a pro quality image. I normally use an E-5, E-3 and E30 for my regular photography but I also wanted a camera for those times I was on my bike or out with friends that would come up to my expectations for picture quality. The PEN is the only micro-body DSLR that can provide that for me. Do notbe fooled by the megapixel hype other brands use. I go with quality and technology. One example of this is the in body image stabilization (anti-shake). ANY lens I put on this body whether it is a competitor or old film lens has Image Stabilization, not just the lenses that you pay extra for. Micro 4/3 (four thirds) lenses are also the smallest size when compaired to the competitors equivalent MM. Size and weight can matter...don't sacrifice quality to get it. I could sing the praises of Olys and you would just think I was nuts. The only thing that will have you joining the chorus is when you get your first Olympus camera. You will never get let down.
