Purchased the FL-36 for use primarily as fill flash to be fired by means of a foot mounted photocell when other flash(s) fire. I sometimes mount the FL-36 directly on the camera hot shoe when I want bounce flash only.
Battery life and recycle time are quite respectable for a unit of this power level charged from 2 1.5v AA cells. The E-620 on-board flash is similar in power and cycles faster with whatever it gets from the 7.4v camera battery.
Auto-matching firing angle for zoom lenses works well. Rotation and angle adjustment of the flash head is as positive and simple to use as my Canon & Nikon flash units. User adjustments/settings are intuitive and simple with a minimum of buttons.
Advanced amateur. Mostly use Canon 20D,30D, now 7D. Along with 580Ex. Wanted a smaller camera so I wanted to try a 4/3 E-pl2. Like the camera a lot. This Fl-36 is under powered and slow on the recycle time. I have mostly shot in TTL and auto mode so far. May need to go manual, but for the price, hoped the TTL would be all I need. Only had this around a month so my opinion may change, but for now unless there is a setting I haven't discovered or is hidden, I will stick with this. Under powered and slow recycle time. Gonna look into a Metz as I have read others have used that with there Olympus cameras.
I own two Olympus Pen series camera's EPL-1 & 2. The flash unit is quite capable and completely worth it if you can pick one at a eBay bargain. Another reviewer pointed out the slow recharge time. (not entirely true) Plus the comment that the on board flash is equal to it. Clearly shows that user didn't know how to use the unit correctly. With that said it is worth the price and will help with portraits and lighting up any subject.
I use an old Olympus E-500 camera and this flash unit works very well for me. I have never been a fan of using flash indoors, but I was persuaded to try again with a dedicated flash that communicates with the camera and provides for various types of bounce flash. The results have surprised me!
Bought this flash because it works very well with my Olympus Camera. I have another electronic flash that has to manually set for each shot, no fun!
Having this unit that is compatible with the camera is Great!
