I had recently traveled the Southern Cities. Upon return decided to remind myself of the history of many of the charming cities such as Charleston, SC. My daughter, now 22, had never seen the mini series but was always a fan of Patrick Swayze after seeing Dirty Dancing. So with that in mind I decided to look to see if the North and South Complete Series available. To my delight, it was on DVD. I purchased the boxed set immediately and happy when it arrived. I had seen it 25 yrs ago, but knew I had forgotten many of the details from the epic mini-series.
I especially LOVED the first two "BOOKS," North & South/ Love & War- I was not however as much a fan of the third book "Heaven & Hell." But I don't think I ever saw it originally - the followup on many of the characters was interesting, and actually provides a much needed follow-up to that post war era in the US... the consequences of war, etc. The 3rd book in movie form however is not as well done as the first two books which came totally alive in contrast. Also, the characters in Heaven & Hell were a little more static (many replaced in the 3rd, or missing all together)- which left it a little flat in characters, it was definitely more about the state of the union post war. HOWEVER, the thrid installment it is worth the watch as a follow to the still so relevent (as is historically based fiction) of the first two installments filmed about 10 years earlier.
NORTH & SOUTH, Book 1, is PRE WAR US. The scenes, feeling, and characters ALL rich and well developed in this first novel onscreen. The 2nd book, LOVE & WAR, was equally stunning in it's massive epic undertaking of the Civil War! In especially BOOKS ONE AND TWO, the onscreen cast is star-studded, and has many now since passed guest stars (great to see again). They had amazing cast participation, REAL locations and a historical story!...
I am thrilled to have all 3 installments of this trilogy it in my DVD library. A great way to learn about the history of our country by BOTH the viewpoints of THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH, as the story cleverly follows a family from each - one South Carolina, and the other from Pennsylvania. This approach allowed the author to tell a very complete story without "taking sides" -- Feels very authentic in this way... because the emotions and stories of these families expresses the time... and is all a part of our USA story, and a human story.
This is a DVD set of "North and South" miniseries. The set contains all three books by John Jakes. Book 1:North and South, Book 2:Love and War, Book 3:Heaven and Hell. The Series aired on television in 1985. It won an Emmy and to this day is on the same level as Gone With The Wind.
This series is about two families: The Mains from the South starring Patrick Swayze as Orry Main, and the Hazards from the North starring James Read as George Hazard. Their friendship is the basis of the story. It starts with both as young men going to West Point and fighting together in the Mexican War and how the two families learn how to interact and deal with the attitudes of each other as a Civil War nears. Both sides see flaws with the others way of life between Southern slavery to Northern exploitation of poor immigrant workers. The series is set from about 1840 involving the Mexican War and Civil War. We see how the families intertwine through several generations. This is one of the very best straight Civil War films. I would give this miniseries a 5 star review!!!! A must for any great video collection.
I rented the entire mini-series from the popular online movie rental (DVD place) and was glued to the screen every minute. I loved the cast of characters from Patrick Swayze as the Southern Gentleman with the Southern plantation and his best friend George from the North. The story was very cool in that through what seemed like endless years of politcal turmoil between the Northern Union and the southern states wanting to suceed from that union and all the issues and problems that led to the great American Civil War...these two guys and their families remained close friends despite having to chose sides in the epic battle. This film was great in both it filming, war battle sequences, special friendship type moments and you found yourself sitting there rooting for your favorite characters. The areas that they used to shoot in were dressed appropriately to reflect the attire of the times. The costumes were great!
If there was something to make me want to sum the film up in one sentence it would be that you really felt what it was like to live in that time!
Rent it - better yet find a great deal on it on eBAy....I did and you will not be sorry but remember "Bent".....That's all I'll say is remember "Bent"
This set contains all three adaptations of John Jakes' "North and South" series. The original miniseries which starred Patrick Swayze as Orry Main is 6 two hour episodes. This story concerns two friends; one from the North (George Hazard) and one from the South (Orry Main) who attend West Point together and follows both of their families. DVD's are front and back which was different, but nice. Patrick Swayze also appears in "Book Two" which picks up as war breaks out between the north and south. "Book Three" deals with the aftermath of the war on those left to pick up the pieces. I loved these miniseries when they first aired and I loved watching them again.
Two teenage boys; Orry Main (Patrick Swayze) from South Carolina and George Hazard (James Read)from Pennsylvania, meet on their ways to military accademy in West Point. Very soon, they become the best friends ever. In the Academy they spend lots of time together and together make the biggest enemy; Elkanah Bent. After graduation, they go for a war with Mexico, where Orry gets hurt really bad, but is saved by George. When they return homes, they don't give up on their friendship - their families spend summer together, their sibillings falls in love, they become business-partners etc. But the situation in the country is not getting better, also not all the family members and neighbours like the idea of people from North and South being friends. In December 1860, South Carolina leaves Union. The war is much closer then it has ever been. It starts at a spring, 1861. George and Orry must fight against each other ...
A great movie I remember seeing it in 1980's when it was first on tv and for some reason they never played it again. with the passing of Patrick Swayze i think they should schedual a showing of this Mini series.for all the enjoy how great an actor he truly was...
