The Nokia N97 features a touch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard, and 32GB of internal flash memory. The smartphone also offers 3G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS and comes equipped with a 5-megapixel camera.
The N97's touch user interface isn't well integrated and can be inconsistent and confusing, especially compared with the competition. We would have preferred a capacitive touch screen instead of resistive.
While the Nokia N97 is packed with features and offers the freedom of an unlocked phone, its clunky touch interface, sky-high price tag, and outdated operating system make it hard to recommend when there are better touch-screen smartphones on the market.

Design - In my opinion the N97 looks similar to the iPhone, just a little chunkier but overall smaller in size. The exact measurements are 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9 mm (18.25 mm at thickest point) and it weights 150g including the battery. In my opinion the phone is a little too bulky for my liking. My phone was black but you can also get it in a sleek white. The 3.5 inch screen takes up most of the front of the phone, at the bottom end is a silver menu key and send/end touch keys. Around the sides of the phone is a chrome look strip which looks very stylish and compliments the black very well. The USB connection and key lock are on the left side, the up/down volume buttons and image capture button are on right, and finally to the top of the phone is the on/off button and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Not forgetting the main camera and its cover on the very back of the phone which we will look into further on in the review.
The Screen & Keypad - As said previously the touchscreen is 3.5 inches in size and resistive. The resolution is 640 x 360 pixels, up to 16.7 million colours. I think that the touchscreen could have been better, it certainly isn't as responsive as the iPhone in that category, I sometimes find myself having to click the screen multiple times before it registers what I am trying to do. Image quality makes up for this. The phone has a full slide out QWERTY keyboard which is very useful if you are a text addict like me. The keys are also well spaced out, I hardly ever press buttons by accident because they are just the right size. The keys are well lit with a backlight, great for texting in low light conditions. In general the keypad slides out effortlessly from the main phone and I am yet to have any problems with it.
Battery Life - Something I'm not too thrilled about is the battery life, I find myself having to charge the phone every few days if not more often, I didn't have this problem with my W850 however I appreciate that the N97 needs more battery to 'do its thing'. Charging is easy, just plug the wall charger in and use the usb connection on the phone, it usually charges fully within 3-4 hours.
Memory - The phone has an amazing 32gb internal memory which can be expanded up to 48gb with a microSD card. Unfortunately the phone can't handle running multiple applications, along with widgets and everything else that comes included with the phone, I think this is down to the CPU which sometimes makes the phone slow and sluggish to use.
Sending & Receiving Texts - As said before you can send texts efficiently with the full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, you can also use the on screen touch keyboard if you prefer. There's no need to worry about deleting your important text messages, there's lots of space to keep them all, just make sure you are saving to the mass memory and not the phone memory. I made this mistake and it slowed down my phone to the point where it was near impossible to use. Overall I am impressed with the ability to save all these texts and how fast I can send them with the keyboard.
Music Player - Another one of the phones highlights, with the 32gb internal memory you can't go wrong when it comes to music. I use it as a substitute to my iPod, I can store just as many songs on the phone and upload them from my computer just as easy as I would with my iPod. Along with the Nokia music store where you can download songs from thousands of artists, which is basically iTunes but ran by Nokia themselves.
This phone is awesome. Everything I expected it to be. Although, I did wish there was a camera lens cover like on its bigger brother the regular N97. The build of the phone was excellent, comparable to the Nokia e71. The slide-tilt screen is a joy to play with, it is very smooth and very tight, it's not flimsy as I thought it would be. The tilt feature is very helpful when watching YouTube videos or movies on the phone, so that you wouldn't need to tilt the phone. The N97 Mini has a true and excellent build quality.
When I first received the N97 mini, I was excited to see what goodies it came with. To my surprise, I found the goodies to be too business-like and presents no fun at all. All you get is wired headset, the charger, a usb-cable, and some manuals. Compare that to the Nokia 5800, which gives you a whole lot more.
To my surprise, the resistive touchscreen was very responsive. I almost forgot that it was a responsive touch screen and believed that it was a capacitive. The downside of the screen is that it has poor sunlight legibility. So using the phone in direct sunlight can and will be a pain.
The menu does look outdated like many other Nokia phones in the past. The 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus carl-zeiss lens and dual LED flash are awesome. Takes very clear pictures, but I wish it had a protective lens cover to prevent scratches to the camera. The battery door of the phone is metal, which is better than the plastic one found in the regular N97. The QWERTY keyboard is well laid out. I had no specific problems. I had the ability to text fast and didn't need to look at the keyboard. I knew I could live without the d-pad that is found on its bigger brother. What it replaces are directional arrow keys in which they are similar to a regular sized keyboard, only smaller. With an internal memory of 8 gigabytes. I personally thought it was enough. It comes with a memory card slot which is able to expand its memory of up to 16 gigs. Not bad. By the time that you would probably fill up the phone with music, pictures, etc. You would probably have a new phone in hand. So 8 gigs is really enough for the average person like myself.
The battery life of this phone is also amazing. However,I do wish that it had the battery life of the Nokia e71. With that said, it has a battery life that is on par with, but much less than the e71. With normal usage, this phone lasted me a week on a single charge.
Overall, the phone is amazing. It gives you a lot for the money in terms of features and quality. The N97 Mini does not feel cheap at all. So, if you are looking for a phone where people will say "WOW!" This phone will do the job. Whether it be for business or pleasure, this phone truly delivers.
I bought the phone because it looked good and sounded good. You can make calls with the phone. Now that all of the positive things are out of the way, I'll tell you about why I threw this phone away. It shuts down every 20 seconds. So if you need to add a contact, you had better type fast or you have to start over. Once I was typing a text and all of the text switched to Chinese. Also, the battery will not last 8 hours, even if you don't use the phone once. If you can get the phone for free, I guess it would make a decent paper weight, or door wedge. Otherwise, a total waste.
When I receive it I was happy because looks as nice and shinny as expected, the idea of one Smartphone with full touch screen plus full keyword in one cell was very exiting for me... the setup process was easy and fast (I already use Nokia phones for some time so the phone main layout was familiar and easy to learn)... now after few weeks of use I learn that you can't use the office application without buying the license... some time the screen suddenly gets frozen or just the cell reset it self... you can add a sort of nice free app (online nuvi store) but is better if you don't do it frequently because gets frozen... the GPS (one of my reasons to buy it) works fine but is hard to get your location, the 3D views as well as the maps are low quality and not up to date at all... the battery real working time is very low... in a bust day last around 6 to 8 hours... more over if you are using the phone or browsing internet and the battery is low also already death, you normally plug it to electrical outlet to continue using it while gets recharged it but you can't do it because supplied charge is not enough for both things... you need to wait at least half hour to be able to use it... for in/our call the phone works fine but some time took too much time to unlock and answer that you get your lost calls counter up... nice and shinny smart phone but not really reliable... maybe the mini on the name is telling something itself
The phone is excellent. I have AT&T as a service provider and have the internet plan for $10. The phone has free GPS which is great. It is a free download via Nokia. We use it when we travel with internet support and it is very accurate. Being a smartphone, it has many options which I love. The options include WiFi..5mp camera..hd video... internet access...I discover new options every week. I highly recommend this phone. I have heard that it is called the swiss army knife of phones. I made the purchase on ebay for a 6 month old phone like new and saved over $150.
