Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewGood

  • THE GOOD

The Nintendo DS Lite is slimmer and much sleeker that the original DS. The device employs innovative dual-screen and microphone-enabled gameplay as well as Wi-Fi multiplayer capabilities, allowing for a growing list of original and fun games that you can't play on any other system. In addition, the system is backward-compatible with almost every GBA title. All these additions come without increasing the price or decreasing the features of the original DS.

  • THE BAD

Playing online games via Wi-Fi can be a hassle. The darker models are just as susceptible to scratches and smudges as the Sony PSP and the iPod, and its multimedia potential remains exclusive to Japan.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

With a slick new design, brighter screens, and a growing library of fun and innovative games, the Nintendo DS Lite is an impressive improvement over the original DS.

An excellent system

When it comes to handheld nintendo systems, I think that this one is pretty high up there. My all time favorite of them is the SP, but this is actually better than the SP in certain respects. The backlight is adjustable to conserve battery life, there's a headphone jack, and it's faster charging. And then there are all the things that make it the DS-the touch screen, etc. From what I've seen, this is a great improvement over the original DS, though I can't compare it to the DSi which I don't own. The size is good and there are good accessories out to help protect it if you're afraid of scratches or whatnot (and it doesn't make it too big either, it still fits in my pocket!). All in all, I'm very happy with the system and I think that it's a great choice, especially if you like your GBA games (which the DSi can't play) as well as the DS ones!

You should own one, from travel to break time, well worth the money.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Excellent product and the best portable to come out thus far. Huge library of addicting titles. It's even backwards compatible. It's amazing how much support this system has/had. As of writing this the 3DS has been out for a month and has been unable to tempt me into buying it. This is my 4th or 5th DS and i cant get enough of them. I have owned the launch DS, 2 DS lites, and a DSI XL. I bought this one for the collect ability and because the DS lite is no longer being sold new. In regards to my past DS consoles the original launch one became obsolete when the lite came out so i bought it. That one along with all my games was stolen and so i replaced it. The DSI XL was an impulse buy which in retrospect wasn't the best due to lack of GBA game support, but its bigger display is worth it. In total the DS lite was the pinnacle of nintendo handhelds and if you don't own one, what's wrong with you?

Overall, the DS Lite is the best of the DS models.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The Nintendo DS Lite is my one of my favorite game consoles of all time (second only to my old N64, we go way back). I love the shape and the aesthetic properties of the console, and the fact that it has backwards-compatibility with GBA games is just excellent.

This particular model of the DS, the collector's edition Legend of Zelda in gold, was the best gift I ever received at Christmas. I'm such a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda that thinking about it raises my blood pressure. The gold paint and the simple Triforce on front of the console are more beautiful to me than the beginning of life. I may be getting a little carried away here, but in short I really love this system.

This particular system was in really good shape and functioned perfectly when I purchased it; unfortunately, the original one I'd gotten for Christmas had a broken charge port and I couldn't afford to get it fixed immediately. While it sat on the shelf as I saved money, when I returned for it the thing was missing, and I was deeply depressed about this. I was so excited to buy this new one, which was a fantastic deal for the price. It came to me used, but it looked brand new. It was in better condition than mine had been.

The selection of games isn't very good for any of the DS systems, the problem being that Nintendo is pumping systems out too fast (a new one every year it seems, each worse than the last) and not enough games are being made in that short timespan. The Legend of Zelda games released were disappointing, as were the new Pokemon games. Two games I will recommend are Rune Factory and its sequels and Etrian Odyssey and its sequels. They're a lot of fun.

Overall, the DS Lite is the best of the DS models (in my opinion, the others didn't bring much to the table and lacked backwards-compatibility). I would buy it again if I needed to and I plan to one day introduce it to my children, just as my parents introduced me to Nintendo.

Gold special edition DS lite

Came in great shape, worked properly after being played for almost 3 hours straight, after recieving it. Also came with charger and 4 games, for the price it could not be beat. Plus it was the zelda gold special edition. My kids have begged me since before christmas for one, but as a single mom I cannot afford two brand new ones. I searched high and low until I found two worth the price right on here on ebay.

Nintendo DS - Legend of Zelda Edition

The Legend of Zelda Edition DS is a must have for Zelda fans. You get the same awesome hand held console but with that extra little LoZ twist. The gold colour allows it to stand out from the rest of the DS' and the Triforce symbol proves to everyone else you cannot play your games without the help of the almighty symbol by your side. Although I haven't tried the DSi I don't think I would want to seeing how the Legend of Zelda DS allows me to play older LoZ games aswell as the new DS ones. If there was anything to dislike about this, it would be that the stylus doesn't incorporate the LoZ theme (besides the colour gold), but then again that would make things harder if you lost it. I decided to buy this product because I am a hardcore LoZ fan, so why wouldn't I? All in all, if you had a chance at this product or a normal DS and your an ultimate LoZ fan like I, I'd say go with the LoZ Edition.
