Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewGood

  • THE GOOD

The Nintendo 3DS provides an impressive 3D gaming experience without the need for special glasses. There's a 3D effect slider, it shoots and displays 3D photographs with its dual back-facing cameras, and it has a single front-facing camera. The 3DS comes preinstalled with a bevy of software and StreetPass and SpotPass services, and it comes with a drop and charge dock. The eShop, including GBA Virtual Console, Internet browsing functionality, DSiWare transferring, and Netflix support, is coming in May.

  • THE BAD

The launch lineup is lackluster, and the disappointing low-resolution lenses provide grainy photos. The 3D effect can cause headaches for some, and it can snap out" due to sensitive viewing angles and games that encourage movement. The 3DS has a very short battery life, and most Internet functionality isn't activated at launch. It's also expensive and may not provide enough value and functionality for those looking for an all-in-one device.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

Though it's a bit pricey, the Nintendo 3DS successfully offers a glasses-less 3D experience that needs to be seen to be believed. A weaker-than-usual launch lineup and some inactivated online features dampen its launch, but the future certainly looks bright.

FUN PORTABLE AND WORTH THE MONEY

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

THE 3DS IS VERY FUN WITH BETTER GRAPHICS AND THE ABILITY TO PLAY IN 3D. THERE ARE NOT A LOT OF GREAT GAMES BUT THE GAMES THAT ARE REALLY GOOD MAKE IT WORTH SPENDING THE EXTRA MONEY FOR THE 3DS. IT'S HARD TO SEE IN BRIGHT SUNLIGHT. I THINK THIS IS A PROBLEM ON ALL DS MODELS. I WEAR SUNGLASSES WHEN I PLAY IN BRIGHT SUNLIGHT. THE LIMITED EDITION MAKES IT EVEN MORE WORTH BUYING SINCE YOU CAN HAVE A RARE COLLECTIBLE. TOP OF THE LINE FOR DS AND WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY. CAMERAS WORK WELL AND THE INTERNET IS EASY TO SET UP AND USE. LOTS OF ACCESSORIES FOR IT LIKE HARD CASE AND EXTENDED BATTERY. AN SD SLOT FOR SAVING AND TRANSFERRING PICTURES. IT FITS IN YOUR HANDS VERY WELL AND THE SOUND IS LOUD AND CLEAR. GO FOR IT

A beautiful design on an incredible system and a truly classic game!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I was reluctant (to say the least) to get on board with the 3D craze. I thought that it seemed extremely gimmicky, and the game selection wasn't super appealing to me. But then I came across this special edition bundle, and the combo of the Ocarina re-release and the special design, I decided it was worth it. And man, was it worth it. The 3d feature on the system, which I thought would be underwhelming, completely blew my mind. The built-in games and functions alone make this worth it. There are several other features that may have been present on previous DS systems, but since the only other DS I have owned is the original DS Lite, this has too many improvements to count. The SD card slot, allowing you to play your music, is one of my favorites. Overall, the system is fantastic, and if one doesn't want to shell out for this bundle, which is mostly for collectors (though this is the best design--way better than the straight colors), just buying the system is a good value.

As for Ocarina: magnificent. The graphics update alone is beautiful, and the game holds up spectacularly over time, but the 3D makes it into the true masterpiece that it is meant to be.

My only caveat would be that this is not a game for the younger kids, or the impatient. It has quite a deal of puzzle solving and is not an action-packed game. Quite a significant amount of time is spent in transit or figuring out where to go next. An early example of this would be the Lost Woods. A simple labyrinth would be challenging enough, but in this particular area, if you enter a passage between two adjacent rooms, unless you follow the correct path, you end up spit back out to the front. I can't imagine a younger player taking the time to sit and make a little diagram to map out through trial and error which is the correct path. And that is one of the earliest minor puzzles, the game continues to escalate. A lot of patience and in some situations ingenuity is required, but other than that most will have a great time playing this game.

The Legend of Zelda 3DS is awesome!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I wanted the Zelda 3DS when it came out but was unable to purchase it at that time. I found it on eBay for a great price and had to get it. I had already purchased 3DS games and needed one to play them on.
The applications are awesome and the camera's picture taking options in 2D and 3D are fantastic. The Street Pass function makes it easy and fun to share and play with friends. I'm even able to access Netflix on the go whenever I want because of the built-in WiFi. The 3D effect is so cool, too! There is nothing to dislike about the 3DS!
This far surpasses any hand-held that Nintendo has offered before. I've never owned anything other than Nintendo hand-held devices, so I couldn't compare it to any competitor on the market today, but who cares? =)

A must have for Zelda fans!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I loved it, I have nothing else to say but to recommend this special edition. I know it was a bit more expensive than the regular 3DS, but it's worth it! A must have for Zelda fans ;)

The one thing I'm not keen on is the region being locked! What is up with that Nintendo, that was just dumb...

Anyway... Great product!

Good product; would recommend to Zelda fans who want a 3DS.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I've actually bought two of these off ebay. One I opened and use, and the other was a present for my girlfriend, which she has kept sealed. There is only one problem I have with it specifically, and that is that the top screen feels a little flimsy, even compared with other 3DSs. The second problem I have is with 3DSs in general, and that is that there is no support for WPA2 internet connections that require a login. While this is no problem for my WPA2 connection at home, it is a problem at my university. To connect, you must provide a valid username and password; there is no key to enter. However, the 3DS only prompts for a WPA2 key. Fixing this would be as easy as a software update, but I doubt Nintendo is working on it. It should be noted that StreetPass still works, you just can't connect to the internet. Aside from these two problems, I love the system and the games. Battery life is good, even when playing 3D games. I'd recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Zelda franchise and wants a 3DS.
