This is a pretty faithful translation to the arcade original version of the game. The highly detailed graphics and great sounding music make the fun to play, not to mention the controls are tight so you can pull off all of those flip throws, jumps and grabs with ease. The only things that I didn't like was that two of the levels from the arcade were missing, and a few enemies were left out, which were probably due to memory limitations. Still they should have left in the New York city level where you had to dodge cars on the Freeway and battle a couple of giant tag team wrestlers at the end of the level.
In conclusion I'd say that Ninja Gaiden is one of the must have titles for the Atari Lynx system! =^.^=
"Easy on the eyes, hard to put down."
This game is everything a platform hack and slash wants to be and then some. The story, while not the most griping seen in video games, seems to actually make a decent excuse for having Ninjas in video games (not that there is any reason for that ofcourse). The story revolves around three different organizations, two swords, and a really pissed off Ninja. What more could you ask for?
Lets take it down the list now shall we?
Graphics: 10/10
Once you see a screen shot of this game, you'll be in complete awe. The game looks that nice on screen, if not better since the whole thing chugs along at a very steady frame rate. Everything from the Ninpo to various weapons on enemies looks amazing. Even the animations look damn good. Easily the best looking game out for a system right now.
Controls: 10/10
Damn, Team Ninja hits every right button on this game. It controls like a dream (even on my half busted Controller S it works nicely!). Every button is placed right where you would want it, making it a breeze to do various advanced Ninja techniques. You can chain hits off of enemies to build up your combos for more essence (either heals you/your ninpo gauges or is used as currency at the shops).
The only hang up seems to be the camera. Its sometimes difficult to get the camera right where you want it, but its pretty damn difficult to do that in any game. Now, its not horrible though. Infact, this has the best camera of most games of this type. It's just not as perfected as the rest of the game that makes this stick out.
Now, time to delve into what makes this such a great game (other then the stated reasons, and the fact it has ninjas). This game is a pure ride of fun, assuming you can hang with the difficulty (more on this later). As you string attacks together for impressive looking combos and slaying any ninja or commando in your path, you will be able to do this with whatever weapon you like (once purchased). Nunchuks to giant hammers, this game has the goods.
Just don't get to carried away with the offense so you forget the defense. Another great feature! This game seeks balance in combat. You will not always be on the offensive, and if you are you will get quickly cut down. While on the defensive though you have plenty of counters and dodges that make it seem as though you never switched from offense to defense. This kind of combat happens 75% of the time, and there are the few break ups in action for a puzzle or platform.
This game gets REALLY hard though, so if you can't take what you give, you may not have that great a time with this one (Unless your a Greater Ninja like myself, then you won't ever taste the bitterness of defeat ^^).
Overall: 10/10
Whats not to like about this game? Anything in this game that isn't polished to a shine is still above average. If you enjoyed any old platform/action titles in your life, go out and buy this as soon as possible. You will never forgive yourself if you don't.
Immediately upon picking this game up, you'll feel something special. Something that makes this more than your average action-adventure game. Perhaps it's the franchise's illustrious history, spanning back to the NES console release of 1988. Perhaps it's the feeling of really being a ninja, thanks to the brilliantly responsive controls and flashy character animations. Whatever it is, there is greatness present right from the start.
The first thing the first-time player will notice is how much deeper and faster the combat system is compared to the genre's norm. You won't find any one-button combat or sluggish response here. Truly one of the most intuitive and hardest to master combat systems the genre has ever seen, it rivals that of true fighting games.
New players may be frustrated by the difficulty, as the game is harder than the average 21st century release. Hearkening back to the days of old, Ninja Gaiden will make you start back at save points that aren't right next to where you died...and it will do it frequently, thanks to the wide variety of intelligent enemies. Once you begin to grasp the mechanics and learn how to counter the enemies' tricky tactics, however, a whole new world of tactical combat will open up to you.
If I had one complaint about the title, (and believe me, it's not an easy thing to find one.) it would be the somewhat clunky camera system. The camera sometimes fails to give you the best angle on the action, but this can usually be gotten around with the manual camera controls. Also, the graphics look a little bit dated by today's standards (there's no anti-aliasing to speak of), but that's to be expected from a game of this age.
Regardless of these minor flaws, this game stands as one of the Xbox's greatest triumphs, and will be one of those titles that remains in everyone's collection for a loooong time.
The Ninja Gaiden games are a staple of an era crucial to Nintendo's dominance in the console race. They're also known for their extreme difficulty levels and fluid, fun game play. There's no point in denying that the Ninja Gaiden games are very difficult and this may make some people tear their hair out. However, with there being 3 games in this one, you can always choose one game or another to play if you get stuck someplace else. Best yet, unlike the original games this version has a password feature! Yeah, that's right, a password feature! So if you worked your butt off trying to beat these games in the late 80's and early 90's, this feature is a breath of fresh air because not everybody wants to torture themselves to get back to the place that took them hours to get to at first. The environments are ever-changing(and sometimes affect gameplay physics), the music is great, and the bosses can have, well, a steep learning curve to beating some of them. It's very unlikely that this title will ever come to the Virtual Console on the wii, and it's ridiculous price is still likely to stay the same which is why this game falls short of a 5/5 rating. The graphics have been upgraded to 16 bit, the music too, but in some places the music is changed so much you might find yourself preferring the original soundtrack.
