My original purchase (Nikon D40 body only) needed a lens so after some research I chose to go with a mid-range lens for my all around regular photography as well as sports/action pictures. What a great choice too. The lens was much cheaper on EBay than the standard retail price and I had enough money leftover to splurge on some more camera accessories. The lens is great for all but the close-up (0'-38') range. For that range I would recommend an 18-55mm lens. This lens however has proven it's worth many times over. And although I do use smaller and larger lenses, this is always my 'go to' lens especially for nature and action shots. The recovery time for lens focus is nothing short of amazing and allows you to do multiple quick shots with ease and be in perfect focus without delay. The weight of the lens is also much less than a standard SLR lens and compliments the camera's body weight keeping it light but well balanced. In automatic mode using the "A" setting it does all the work for you. Simply set your frame, then press halfway down on the button and it sets your focus perfectly with all compositions included, press all the way down and you have your photo, it's really that simple! The white dot on the body and the lens also make it much easier for quick and proper lens alignment and makes switching lenses a breeze. To have some more control over your subject use the "M" for manual mode and you set all of your camera guidelines. For those who are just starting off I would recommend getting this particular lens size for great all around photography with professional results everytime. If I had to leave all of my lenses home and choose only one to take with me, this would be the one! Cost was less than $150 on EBay and retail at our local camera store for the exact same lens was over $350. If you can afford an 18-200mm lens I would recommend that but you're looking at more than doubling your cost over this lens yet covering a wider range of focal points. For my dollar this was by far the absolute best choice!

I bought this lens because it was a very good price. I love using it for landscape/outdoor photography. Loved that it came with a lens hood as well. Sometimes the auto-focus takes a bit long, but that could be just one of the downsides to buying used. Overall, great product for the money.

Go with the 70-200mm, otherwise this will work on a budget.

This is a good mid/low range lens. If you are just beginning and want a good mid range zoom this will suffice. It is priced a a couple of hundred less than the 70-300mm and about 2300 less than the 70-200.It is definately a bigginer lens. It will do the job at a very reasonable price. It does focus a bit slower than the higher end lenses but should suffice for most of the shooting an average shooter is going to do. It seems to seach a bit before setting on a focus setting. It might just me or how I set it on the camera. One of the nicer things is that this lens does come with VR at this price range which does help. Go with the 70-200mm, otherwise this will work on a budget.

This lens gave me the extra "zoom-in" capacity I needed for some good portrait shots of my grandchildren without having to be almost on top of them. I love it! For shots on the soccer field as well as at home or of kids swinging from a tree branch, this is the ideal lens.
Having a Vibration Reduction Switch is a real asset on this telephoto lens.
I would definitely buy this lens again, especially as the cost was more affordable than at our local stores.

Great lense- great ebay price and experience, but this product would be worth the money at 3-4 times the price. Up close action, great VR and Silent movement..
