Product description
The SC-29 Off-Camera AF TTL Cord which mounts to the hot shoe on Nikon digital and film SLR's enables an attached Speedlight to accurately autofocus in low light no matter where it's placed for beautiful shadowless lighting. This 1.5m (4.9ft) coiled cord incorporates a new AF Illuminator on the remote flash mounting shoe which overrides the Speedlight's AF Illuminator to eliminate any possibility of autofocus discrepancy when using a Speedlight off-camera. In addition the SC-29 can be used with the SB-800 Quick Recycling Battery Pack as an off-camera master controller in a wireless multi-flash setup. Other Nikon Speedlights can also be used remotely with the SC-29. They will retain the automation and TTL functions as if the flash was mounted directly onto the camera's flash shoe but the SC-29's AF illuminator will not operate. Nikon's professional-quality TTL multiple-flash system is designed so that even a novice can use it with confidence right away. You'll be able to create stunning effects and always get perfectly exposed pictures. Plus there's no need for complicated manual exposure-value calculations or accessory flash meters.

Great Performance from a Small Flash Unit

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is a very practical alternative to the larger Nikon Speedlight Flash units, though not ideal for all situations. But, for what it offers it is a great compact hot-shoe flash. For performance this SB-400 is hard to beat. It offers a very fast recharge cycle time so you don’t miss as many shots as you would with your built-in flash. The added height sitting on top of your camera body avoids the dreaded shadow that appears with the built-in flash when a longer lens is mounted and in use. It does offer a vertical (up and down) swivel so that the flash can bounce off the ceiling when needed, but not a horizontal (left to right). This is the reason it may not be suitable for all uses. However, when shooting in portrait mode, if there is something (like a wall) to bounce the flash you will still get great results. It might just take a little practice getting used to doing this. Shots with the flash pointing straight-on should only be done from a good distance as it does put out a strong flash for its size. (Nikon claims 66 feet, though I have not tested this to the extreme.) The lock mechanism is a lever that moves left and right, making the attaching and detaching that much easier and quicker. The SB-400 runs on two (2) AA batteries and gets particularly long-life from Energizer Advanced Lithium. Unfortunately I have never calculated the hours but suffice it to say that I have been impressed with how long I go between changing them. Included with a new unit is a soft zippered pouch to protect it when you travel or store it. If you need a light-weight, small profile, high-power unit, this is the one. As a note, I have used this with both my D90 and D5100. Definitely recommended.

Excellent choice for pro or amature

Is an excellent compact flash for any Nikon digital camera. Lightening fast to power up and uses only two AA batteries. No cables, is hot shoe. Comes with bag for carry. Refreshes extremely fast, presents low profile on top of camera. Very light weight and powerful to do any inside room photo you may want. No longer do you have to spin the lock to the camera shoe, this one has a simple lever switch on the back to lock on making it fast and extremely effecient. Coupled with a good Nikon D series camera is an unbeatable combination for the price. Highly recommended.

Tiny but mighty! Buy the retired SB-400 over the new less superior SB-300.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The SB-400 is a superior flash to the new SB-300 for several reasons. First, I have yet to change batteries as I do not use it often, but it has a quick recycle time all the same. The double A batteries are more suited to my lifestyle than scrounging for 3AAA batteries for the SB-300. It throws a more powerful flash, and it is simple to use. It is built sturdily and the hotshoe is metal not plastic and locks securely. I bought the SB-300 but after reading the Ken Rockwell reviews, I sent it back and bought the SB-400 via Ebay. So glad I did!

    Nikon SB-400, Great Speedlight

If you are in the market for a speedlight I would highly suggest this one. It is a compact, light weight flash that makes indoor photography much easier with its rotating head that allows you to bounce the light off the walls instead of a direct shot. I am also impressed with its recharge time, that will make you smile, esspcially when compared to the flash that comes on your camera. All in all i am very pleased with this item, the only bad thing that I can say about it is it does not rotate left to right, but it does not seem to mater when you turn you camera to get a vertical shot it still gives you a nice soft light.

    Another great Nikon product

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Excellent shoe mount flash for lower end Nikon Cameras and for every day use, and works just as well as other higher cost flash units . Adjustable angle flash lens extremely useful. Low weight makes holding of camera easier
