Comfortable, compact body design; very low noise at higher ISOs; highly customizable menus; 10.2-megapixel CCD sensor
Slow kit lenses; RAW editing software costs extra; controls can be awkward; occasionally slow to focus; no automatic sensor cleaning; RAW-plus-JPEG mode limited to basic instead of fine JPEG compression
The Nikon D40x makes a very nice first dSLR, though experienced SLR shooters looking for a Nikon should spend the extra cash for the D80.

Having not done any serious photography since high school, it was a big leap for me to move from a film camera to a DSLR. Having used this now for 3 weeks though it's so much easier and produces much better results. This was initially purchased just to get back into the photography hobby but has since turned into a new found happiness.
Simple to use with automatic mode and produces crisp, clear and beautiful colors as well as amazingly defined edges in your pictures. Much lighter than some of the film cameras I used in high school and afterwards and much better weight balance. Easily interchangeable lenses and battery life that can last for weeks even after several hundred photos.
No real negatives on this camera. It's great for the beginner or advanced photographer and will give beginner to intermediates huge room for growth. This is the absolute best all-around camera I've ever seen or owned! In manual mode you have all the professional quality features you would normally have with any SLR camera but with a bonus of having a built in CPU to handle the small and sometimes annoying details.
Comparing this to the old Pentax and Olympus cameras I used in high school is unfair considering they were made in the 60's. What does stand out though is the quicker shooting time and less set-up time to capture amazingly brillant photos. Better yet is the no chemicals and film/darkroom process that we used to have to deal with. Now you can genuinely shoot like a pro without thousands of dollars investment!
The plethora of readily available and affordable lenses also allows you to take a very wide range of subjects from nature, science, people, autos, motorcycles, action shots, space, architecture or almost anything you could possibly imagine. With this camera there is absolutey NO limitations!!!
I owned this model when I first took up photography, and it's a great beginning/intermediate camera. I purchased this particular camera for my 15 year old stepdaughter and was able to explain it to her over the phone. She LOVES it and used it on her recent vacation to Florida. Apparently she took a ton of pictures and can't wait to share them with me. It has all the features you want in a digital camera, while maintaining a user-friendly approach. It's a great back-up body once you outgrow it, as well. I LOVE Nikon and will never own another brand of camera. Even at full price, this camera is totally worth the money. I also recomment the seller! I had no issues with my purchase and everything arrived as stated and on time. Would definitely purchase from this seller again.
This is close to the perfect compact DSLR. Most of the features more expensive cameras have will never be used by most people. This model promoted my wife from point-and-shoot photography to serious picture composition. Most other cameras were too involved to hold her interest. I applaud Nikon for a well designed camera using their good lenses and a compact, lightweight body. You won't be taking pictures with the camera that you left at home.
I bought this camera because I wanted a good DSLR camera and Nikon has some of the best and this one is great for beginners who want greater creative control over just 'Auto' settings on a point-n-shoot camera and takes great pics using the RAW(NEF) file format. Although this is just a 10.2MP camera, I don't forsee having to print 11x14 images. But it's good to know the capability is there. Some lenses that are for the full frame siblings will fit and do a wonderful job. After reviewing this and other comparable cameras from Kodak, Canon...etc, this one won out. It has decent weight even with the lens attached and firmware updating is very simple. I plan on keeping this for quite a while and passing it on to my son (maybe) when I'm ready to upgrade to a full frame setup.
