Before i start my review, let me give you some background info, this game started the video game revolution. Yea there were video games before this, Atari, and even Nintendo, but this game (and also The Legend of Zelda, to a lesser extent), launched gaming into the stratosphere. Nintendo was really just an experiment in the early to mid 80's, barely getting much interest. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of this and Legend of Zelda, created gameplay, music, and a sense of wonder with this game that was unparalleled and this game still stands the test of time today. (well maybe he didn't create the music, but you get the idea) Nintendo, before 1985, made arcade and pocket games, this was the first MAJOR home game system.

Games like this (8-bit) are not made any more today. Yes, we have better graphics, more complicated controls, more cutscenes, but not the same sense of tight, amazing gameplay. Today's games not only cannot compare in many ways to the simpler gameplay that Nintendo exhibited in the late 1980's, but quite simply would not have existed, as video games in the late 70's/early 80's were in a huge slump and their existence was threatened.

As for Super Mario Bros. itself, You have a set number of lives at the start, can collect more lives in several ways... you generally have rather few lives in order to complete the game. You can warp, collect power-ups such as fireballs and become large.

The control is SUPER-RESPONSIVE and works amazingly well. You can speed up while holding B I believe. Yes, Mario/Luigi's running can be kinda loose, where it is hard to gauge how far you jump, but overall, you feel such a sense of speed and freedom while playing.

The music is very well done, during the castle levels where you fight Bowser, 8 in the game i believe, the music creates a sense of doom and danger. While above ground, the music tends to be more mellow, but great music that really fits the game.

The difficulty is rather high FOR ME, anyway, because once you run out of lives, you have to start from level 1-1 ALL OVER AGAIN. I have beaten "Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels" probably about 4 times but have yet to beat this game. (You can save after every level in "lost levels"

The replay value is high simply because of how fun the game is, you never really get tired of it. I even prefer this game to SMB3 which is considered arguably the best 2-D platformer of all time.

To sum up, play this game, if you are one of the few gamers on the planet who have yet to experience it, it put home video games, and video gaming in general, on the map. This game never gets old.

Review For: New Super Mario Bros. (Wii, 2009)
It's a blast from the past. In the 80's you probably played Super Mario Brothers on the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Over 19 years have passed since the last 2D-side scrolling installment of the Mario Brothers Series was released on a gaming console, Nintendo now brings you New Super Mario Brothers Wii.

This game is based off of what Nintendo started in 1985. The game play is very similar to Super Mario Brothers 3 and World (SNES). There are One to Four players. This time around Nintendo has you all playing together (cooperative or competitive) - alternating version is not available - no need to wait for your turn to play. You can play as either Mario, Luigi, or 2 different Toads.

This game goes back to Nintendo's and Mario's roots for what jump started the video game industry. If you are familiar with the series you will find many things reminiscent of past mario games, for example:

    8 Worlds : SMB, SMB2, SMB3
    Flag Ending: SMB
    Riding Yoshi: SMBW
    Maps for World: SMB3, SMBW
    Item House: SMB3
Saving Princess Toadstool: SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMBW
    Pipes: SMB, SMBW
    Half Way Save Point: SMBW
    Koopas Castles: SMB3, SMBW
    Items: Mushroom, Firepower, Star

All the characters are back from Bowser to Goomba's, Bullet Bills, Chain Chomps and more.

Game play is the same from earlier versions of Mario Bros series.

    New things include:

Add or remove multiplayers while you are playing a game -- no need to quit because someone is tired of playing, add them back in when they want to play or when people come over.

    Items:
Propeller mario -- shake wiimote to propeller into the sky.
Penguin Mario: Move more freely in water and on ice -- shoot ice balls. Belly slide on snow to kill enemy's.

Ice Mario: Freeze enemy's and use them as a block to jump on.

Star Coins: Use these to unlock hints for each level in Peach's castle.

Super Guide: Die 8 times in one level and watch how to beat it or let the computer beat it for you and move on.

Multiplayer Mode: New as you can lock yourself in a bubble if your friends can not get through a tough section -- and you unlock yourself out of the bubble when you want to play again.

If you die, you come back if you have remaining lives to help the team.

New Modes: Coin Battle -- battle in a level to get most coins.
Free for all -- play any course with your friends.

All in all this game is great if you are new to the Mario Francise, a casual gamer, fan of the original Mario series, multiplayer gaming, and want to have some old school fun. I recommend this game to everyone who owns a Wii. This is what Mario Should have been the first time around. Simply Amazing.

Very good 4 fans, but newbies may prefer a newer title.

A very good game for fans; however, if you’re new you may want to start with a newer title.

    -The Good
    -Useful Power-Ups
    -Colorful Levels
    -Take-Turn Multiplayer
    -The Bad
    -Blocky Graphics
    -Short Jump Time
    -The Summary
-King Koopa has kidnapped Princess Peach! You, Mario, must save her! Using many power-ups, such as the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower, must find Princess Peach and defeat the evil King Koopa! Play through many colorful stages including castles and field.
It can be tough saving the kingdom all on your own. How about you get some help? In Two Player Mode, you can play as Mario while a friend plays as Luigi!
This game is now available on the Virtual Console for the Wii.

    Super Mario Bros Wii

    Created: 03/30/10
Review For: New Super Mario Bros. (Wii, 2009)
If you own a Nintendo, you probably know most everything there is to know about Mario. Although Nintendo tends to overplay the Mario card, creating some real stinkers, this is one to have. If you grew up playing all the old Mario titles, this one is for you. Back to the standard scrolling game with some new features you could never do before. The new game takes advantage of the wii remote to accomplish certain tasks. For example, a shake of the remote during a jump allows for a mid air spin which extends the length of your jump. Or certain platforms will tilt up or down depending on how you're holding the remote. There are new power ups to use in the worlds, notably the propeller suit, which with a shake of the remote allows you to temporarily fly through the air.

One very obvious difference with this game is multi-player mode, where up to four people can play the same level at the same time. A first for the side scrolling games. I have not personally used this function very much as my kids are too small, yet. But it should be fun once they get older.

Overall, a great title. Get it and enjoy.

The classic formula returns to a Nintendo console

I just purchased a Wii and this game for my 4 year old. I like the game, however is there a way to save the game instead of having to go back to the very beginning? I have made it through three worlds and if I use all my lifes it make me go all the way back. The game is a great challenge. Not brutally hard, mind you, but it puts up a good fight especially compared to the Nintendo DS game. Expect to put in several hours just in getting through to the final boss, and then returning to the levels to score each of the three coins that'll unlock even more levels. And then, to give it even more replay, there's the multiplayer aspect.
The original Mario Bros., an arcade game released in 1983, revolved around the idea that there were two brothers working together towards a single goal. But when Nintendo created Super Mario Bros., that partnership sort of disappeared and the adventure became solo. New Super Mario Bros. Wii brings the camaraderie back in a big way: not only can you play two players at the same time during the adventure, but it can become a quartet if you've got the controllers on hand.
