|Mask of the Betrayer, the first expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights 2, places gamers back in the heart of the Forgotten Realms after the conclusion of the main campaign from Neverwinter Nights 2. The new journey, estimated to add 20 to 30 hours of gameplay, begins in Rashemen, a harsh, spirit-heavy land located near the powerful nation of Thay. Experienced players can use their existing Neverwinter Nights 2 character while those new to the series can create a completely new epic hero. The expansion adds a number of new beings, as well as classic Dungeons and Dragons creatures like blue dragons, hags, and the two-headed fell troll. Players can also choose from more than 20 races, including the new Genasi, and then begin mastering more than 50 new spells like mass fowl, damnation, and vampiric feast. Online support gives gamers the option to take on the new campaign alone or team up with friends, and the advanced modding tool gives creative players the ability to craft their own adventures.|

Neverwinter Nights is one of the most epic, game changing RPG out there!!! It has been since it came on the market. It was the first I ever played and no others have ever come close. Great story lines, fighting that takes pre-planed strategy and for you to be able to quickly change it if need be mid-battle. Strong plots and character development that takes your companions to new levels with the "influence" that you gain or lose with each companion from simply interacting with the world around you. I have heard people complain that MotB and SoZ expansion packs were not as good as the original NWN2 but they are only supposed to be expansion packs not games onto themselves. The original NWN and NWN2 can be played easily at least a year if not more without getting bored because of all of the combinations of play you can do never the less how much longer they can last with expansion packs. You can also use the tool sets to build your own campaign or find one of the many fan sites to download free player created modules/campaigns to have even more fun. Don't think that the player created ones are any less great then the ones the developers made either! These fans have put sometimes months and years into building the perfect game that just happens to use the base game. Some have created there own extra worlds, mini-games, deep plots and a story line that last at least 65 hours and up. The developers of the NWN line really had the gamer in mind when they put it together. With the base of the NWN PC games and the NWN novels out the online Neverwinter Nights game scheduled for this Winter will easily wipe out every other online game out there!!! Don't believe me? Check out the site and see the people form guilds and alliances already. NWN has become more then just a game it has become a standard not just in the gaming industry but also in the fantasy fiction section of your local library. I'm sure theres more but just writing about the game makes me want to play and I think I will!!!!
Fun game well worth trying if you like this type of game. Hours of entertainment. If you like rpg this is a good one and works on pc which many do not these days.
Excellent addition to the NWN2 series adding more features to the original game while continuing the rich storyline
NWN2 was one of the coolest RPGs I have ever played. What makes it stand out is the high quality of the story line and the great NPCs you bump into -- each with their own personality and agenda. The NWN2 original campaign also offers an amazing amount of game time.
Mask of the Betrayer falls quite a bit short of its predecessor. It has a good story line, some decent NPC characters (though not as developed as the original NWN2 campaign), but they clearly did not put the effort into this campaign that they put into the first. The story line, while good, is very shallow and narrow. Not a lot of sub-plots. Only 4 NPCs of consequence. Only 4 stores in the whole game. The voice acting is not up to snuff with the first campaign either. One NPC mumbles way too much, and all the NPC voices are often lost beneath the background music and ambient noise. Very, very few cut scenes. The spirit-eater conundrum, while an interesting twist, puts undue pressure on the pace of the game.
There may be 20 hours of gaming here, I know I put in about 60-70 in the first campaign. However, as stated, the story is a good one, and has a strong ending (multiple endings, depending how you play it). Overall it is a bit rough around the edges, but if you liked the first it is worth a play -- though don't expect the depth and refinement of the first campaign.
If you loved NWN2, Mask of the Betrayer is for you. It's got another grand, epic adventure, this time with a new set of companions and a new influence system. The ability to get to Epic levels allows you to unleash devastating new attacks and spells, and there are virtually no bugs. Top-notch writing and acting compliment the entire experience. The only con I found while playing this game is the Spirit Meter, which gradually depletes and only refills when you do certain actions (no spoilers here!). It lends you a sense of urgency but doesn't allow you enough time to fully explore all the areas of a game, as you always want to keep moving before it gets to 0 (at which point you die). All in all, this is a worthy successor to the NWN2 franchise and a good continuation of the story from NWN2...unlike Storm of Zehir.
