I bought this router because of its remote cloud sharing capability. All the other standard wireless router functions work well. I am very satisfied with it.
One simple but elegant feature that is unique to NetGear's router is that they stand up vertically. This creates a smaller footprint than the usual brood of router's out there. This is one compelling reason why I pick NetGear over Linksys. A great idea which saves space on an already crowded table top.
The focus of my review will be on the cloud sharing capability.
This router permits a USB flash drive to be shared on a local network or through the cloud. Cloud sharing can be done through through anonymous ftp or through an install software on the remote PC.
The software approach is actually pretty nifty. The remote drive shows up as a shared drive and you can access the files like you would on a local drive. However this ReadyShare Cloud software conflicted with a CAD software I am running. The CAD software require constant connection to a remote license server. However connection to this license server gets broken repeatedly causing the CAD software to hang.
The anonymous FTP method is the worse method of remote file access because it has absolutely no security. You gain access to the USB driver without a password. As long as you know the IP address to the remote drive, access is available to anyone. I like this method of file access because it does not require any installed software beside an FTP client software. However this absolute lack of security forces me to turned this feature off. If not for this limitation, this router deserves a 5 star but I can only give it a 4 star.
Good device. This router offers a wide cover range and great wireless capability. Between my kids and I, we have 5 computers on, 2 smart phones, 3 tablets, 1 xbox 360 and 3 ps3's online at the same time 80% of the time at my house and this device covers all of them.
This router is extremely easy to setup and install for home use/security use too. It has an app called NetGear Genie which allows you to change your router settings and severity of what is allowed/blocked by the router.
The only complaint I have about this router, is the lack of parental control from the Genie app. For example, when I read about all of these features I assumed I had more control when my kids are online. When my kids are gaming and it is time for bed I can log into the Genie and see what machines are on the internet (PS3, PC's, iPhones, etc). When it's time to turn it off I can not controll any of the lines connecting to the router from the Genie. Since it shows the devices using the router in a spider image (w/ the router in the middle and every device using the internet attached to the router w/ a --)))-- line to show online), you would think you could click on the line and choose to disconnect the device from the Genie, but you can NOT do this. This was the biggest downer of the device. Basically the Genie is a flashy way to see what you already know, who's online in your house. You can't change people's access, you can't boot people off or block them, you can't even reboot the router with out physically going to the router and shutting it off w/ the power button.
Too bad, maybe some day they'll update the software to allow manual shut offs from the smart phone, or reboots and blocking lines/devices...that would be the security feature I would like to have on this router.
Otherwise, the router works extremely well. It transfers all date VIA wireless and wired just fine and it gives great strength far distance w/ all of my devices.
off to an excellent start. easy setup and smooth performance. Throughput speed test, wired and wireless, are equal to what the modem alone puts out.
I find the unit's appearance pleasing and it fits in with the rest of my multimedia and computer gear. I do not have regular TV--so I watch movies and shows via computer to TV. It works great for this purpose and this was the reason I opted to buy this -- very glad I did.
My laptop picks up the 5Ghz with ease from the other rooms.
Also, like the easy setup for guest network.
Currently, I am not using some of this units features but will likely do so in the future, i.e. usb printer, usb share or the media server.
Router is sleek and nice looking. Netgear provides excellent Parental Controls and works seamlessly with OpenDns who provide additional parental controls, this Router is much better then the one provided me by Comcast(Xfinity) which was cheap and had inferior software and hardware and would not work with OpenDns.
Great Router for the price..
Having dual band, guest network, huge range and USB ports for printer sharing was the selling point for me. it delivered on all counts. This router powers my Comcast cable modem, iphones, ipad, sharp 70inch smartTV and my wifi thermostat. I live in a two story house and every corner of the house gets full signal. I was skeptical of internal wifi antennas at first, but turns out that was not an issue.
