After having a series of espresso makers, including La Pavoni Europiccola, Briel Lido, Solis, and Gaggia Espresso Deluxe, with limited success and always a mess, I finally threw in the towel after enjoying the espresso that was produced by a Nespresso machine while visiting a relative abroad. With the other machines I had, it was always a matter of having fresh beans, grinding them just before using, having to vary the grind due to humidity and other factors, then tamping and hoping that the temperature and pressure were just right. Rarely did I get a decent crema and no more frequently did I pull a shot of espresso that was worth anywhere near the bother. The Nespresso machine does everything right and not much wrong. Yes, I suppose some would squawk about the fact that you are limited to coffee provided in capsules by Nespresso, but the choice is broad (and getting broader) and the coffee is always fresh, ground perfectly, and ready to go. What's more, the crema is excellent and the cappuccino/latte capability is just fine. Cleanup is a nonevent. At its full retail price of $400-$500, the D290 is fairly costly, but since refurbs with six-month warranties from Nespresso are available at half that price, the detail becomes much more interesting. Why anyone would bother with any other machine is beyond me. Nespresso is the way to go. Period.
I have used many coffee makers and espresso machines over the years, and nothing compares to the Nespresso D290.
I simply do not know how I ever lived without it.
Pricier than some on the market, but you definitely get what you pay for when it comes to espresso machines.
Fast, Functional, Easy to use, Good Looking Machine!!!
I researched several espresso machines and settled on the Nespresso D290. I was hesitant to make the purchase as the Nespresso machines require that you buy their capsules. But after making the purhcase and making my first espresso shots and lattes I was receiving compliments from family and friends on the quality and great tast. It is so easy to use - with no mess as you find with the "conventional" semi - automatic espresso machines. Every espresso shot is perfect. Capsules can be ordered through the Nespresso website or by phone with fast 2 day delivery. There are several capsules to choose from. Very happy with my choice on this machine.
I like it because it is small and fits nicely on my countertop. To me, I love the crema it makes with the 19 bars of pressure. It is easy to operate and to clean.
It is a bit noisy while brewing.
I bought this machine because the price was affordable for me, and especially because of the crema it produces in a cup of Nespresso coffee.
The Nespresso system is used worldwide. The first one I saw was in Switzerland. At that point I had to get one. The pod system is great because you have multiple choices, and they explain each choice for you. You know the strengh, size and taste of each pod. The pods are colored, so it is easy for friends to remember which one they liked. I remembered the color from Switzerland, and made it my first order! Nespresso even comes out with specialty pods though out the year. The system itself is quick, easy, and no mess. You can make a single or double, you can easily make lattes or cappicinos. The only complaint I would have is that you can only get the pods from Nespresso.com, and you must order a minimum of 5 sleeves (10 in a sleeve.) All in all though, if you want the best Espresso machine, this one is it!
