Faternity has guys who drink have sex and live in a dump~ one BIG PARTY~ JOHN BELUCHI SHINES~
THE DELTA FATERNITY HOUSE IS A TOTAL PIT~ ADD THE GROUP OF MAINLY HAPPY LOOSERS TRYING TO AVOID OPENING A BOOK AND YOU HAVE THE PLOT~ some very funny moments when you see the BAD falling apart Delta House and their opening drive to recruite more loosers ~ ADD John Beluchi who put the term FOOD FIGHT in high gear~ Tim Matheson is the the stud who never says NO and his crew including Beluchi~ living in the run down Dump~ the fun is watching WITH THE VERY ANAL OMEGA HOUSE FULL OF DOO GOODERS~ MORE THAN FUNNY~! INCLUDING A VERY YOUNG KEVIN BACON~ full of great hysterical and beyond poor taste of party after party~ but the ZERO grade point averages of most of the Delts soon have them getting tossed off campus and one last hysterical revenge on the entire town~ some extra funny scenes are Beluchi going thru the ala carte line and eating more on the way throught it than he has on his pilled high tray~ great food fight and those tacky clothes from the 1960s make this a fun laugh out loud silly movie~ also worth the price of the DVD is the 30th year reunion of the cast and the FUN facts you can have captioned in as one of the special features~ one fun fact~ Donald Sutherland was paid $55,000 for 2 days work and he turned down a percentage of the gross which could have raked him a cool $17 million dollars~ more than funny~
I GIVE THIS A 10 OUT OF 10 FOR A CLASSIC STUPID FUNNY MOVIE THAT THOUGHT DRUNK COLLEGE KIDS WERE ONLY IN SCHOOL FOR FUN~ LOL~

National Lampoon's Animal House set the standard for what has become an entire genre of film. National Lampoon transition onto film broke ground on well produced (in defiance of a limited budget) on the "Gross Out - Screwball Comedy". This set the stage for films like Stripes, Ghostbusters, Caddy Shack, Heavy Metal, Spies Like Us and so many more. The direction towards a "Damm the torpedoes full speed ahead" view that brought us true give the people what they want and we can still turn a buck in the major film industry. The crossover of actors with names and comedy that pushed the edge of what can be done on film made it possible for historic classics like The Blues Brothers and Splash! Without the visceral punch Animal House brought us, comedies might have remained in the realm of Billy Wilder-ish (no taking away of his wonderful work), Doris Day "family" driven humor. A small handful of films such as Dr. Strangelove, M.A.S.H. Animal House and others broke through the barrier of appeal to everyone to hit'm right in the tender spot of the funny bone.
So many concepts were tried and worked in Animal House that today, all film takes for granted. Example: The soundtrack, we usually don't expect the music score of a comedy to be nothing more than an adjunct to the film except for musicals, but in Animal House, director John Landis requested that Elmer Bernstein, known for soundtracks from films like "True Grit" to make as he was versed in, to create a true "collegenet" score that could also play to the levity of the film without sounding anything close to silly making the score an actor of the film itself! This was the first time this approach was used to a score in a comedy and led to a LOT of work for Bernstein, going on to create scores for films like Meatballs, Going Ape!, Trading Places, Vegas Vacation and more!
Without National Lampoon's Animal House, the world would be a lot less funny, as if the Germans had bombed Pearl Harbor.
I give it a 9 on a ten point scale.
This is the best college comedy ever made. Nothing has ever come close to comedic perfection, and never will again. The early bird director John Landis directs this film into greatness bringing stars John Belushi, Tim Matheson, Tom Hulce, Mark Metcalf and Donald Sutherland to the screen in brilliance. True, this film is just about a bunch of misfits defying authority in a campus of 1962, but that's what makes it so good, and original. Belushi, Metcalf, and others bring many of the laughs here, but it is mainly it's reputation that brings this film into hilarity. A landmark in cinema comedy. By the way, screenwriters Harold Ramis and Chris Miller originally were going to make this a film about Charles Manson called Laser Orgy Girls, so thank god Douglas Kenney came in and straightened this out to the right part.
It's animal house! C'mon! there is nothing I can add to all of the reviews this movie has had over the years, the excellence in the comedy of Belushi, The fact that the cast at the time was considered newbies, one went on to be Amadeus, the other the female love interest on Indiana Jones, and others in multiple movies on the A and B scale, even on twisted sister music videos. I can go on and on. Hey did you know they made this movie in about 28 days?...
There have been many knock-offs but none can hold a candle to the original. This movie is a must see for everyone, and if you don't like it! well then your no fun anyway and isolation from humor and people of humor is a good Idea for you..
This classic movie was certainly a model for my college life. A fun movie that has it all; romance, adventure, suspense, horror, drama, tragedy, war and redemption. Oh did I forget comedy? And some big name stars in this, as well as a very young Kevin Bacon (for you 6 degree fans out there, he's the ROTC guy who gets run over by the crowd at the end). While, yes much of the humor is sophmoric at times (this is college life), many of the scenes in this movies have been used elsewhere. There is also a tenuous tie to the Van Wilder movie; the caracter played by Tim Matheson, (Otter), may be the father in Van Wilder, also played by Tim Matheson. There is also a hats off to this movie in Old School as well (the whole frat house thing).
