1981 was the single greatest year for classic slashers. There was the good, the bad, and the ugly. There were also some that would become the "classics". My Bloody Valentine is one of those and is, without hesitation, one of the finest examples of early 80's slasher films ever released. The plot is simple: a terrible accident occurs in a mine 20 years ago which kills some miners and leaves one very angry survivor. Bent on revenge, the lone survivor kills those he feels are responsible and threatens to continue killing every year on Valentines Day if the town ever holds a VD party again. Well, the town decides that 20 years is long enough and defiantly plans a huge celebration. The rest is slasher history.
This films theatrical release was heavily edited for gore but the film was still effective. This extended release FINALLY includes the edited gore and it packs quite a punch. From the opening sequence to the infamous "Dryer" scene, all the nastiness we missed upon it's release has been restored.
Knowing the short availability of these types of films, if you are a fan, GRAB A COPY NOW! The extras a few but quite fun. Deleted scenes with some commentary, and a featurette "Bloodlust: Ny Bloody Valentine and the Rise of the Slasher Film". No gore hound or horror fanatic should be without this gem in their collection.
From the people who brought you "Happy Birthday to Me" (also reviewed by me!)comes this less involved murder spree on film. Read the product description for info on plot...I'll say this, lots of gore cut out, and there are absolutely NO extras whatsoever! However, this is a must for any self respecting slasher fan. Well shot, well acted, and well paced...as these films go. Too bad Burman Studios SPFX was cut so ruthlessly by the MPAA! Perhaps Paramount will release a better version someday,...ok, that is asking too much from a studio who constantly release lackluster DVDs in the genre. BUT, at least they are releasing these odd, forgotten gems. That is all we can really ask... One of the only slash ficks that is obviously set up for a sequel that never happened. You can normally find this title for around $7...Grade: B+

Ok, so years ago ther was a mine accident and people died because the guys supposed to be doing security at the mine went to the Valentine's day party. From that day the town of Valentine's Bluff (cute, no?) cancelled all valentine Day activities.
But of course after 20 years people get lax and Hallmark keeps calling telling them to sell more cards, chocolate and cupid plushes so the town gives in and plans a dance ... and all hell breaks loose! Yay!!! So the town cancels the dance. Boooo!!! So the young people decide to hold one inside the mine. YAY!!! Wait, INSIDE the mine? Umm, have they not seen ANY horror movies? Didn't a bunch of people die down there? Isn's it dirty, dark, dank and hard to breath? Doesn't matter because they have to DANCE! or get freaky or DIE!!!!
Yeah, it is a cheesy little movie made in 1981. But my love affair with so-bad-they-are-good horror classics from the 70's and 80's makes this one a must see/own movie. watch it or get a heart-shaped box of chocolates...with a real heart in it!!!!
This holds up surprisingly well, reasonably atmospheric and suspenseful. The blu-ray transfer is good. I prefer the old 1980's slasher films from my youth to the newer ones because the old movies had nudity and gore--when I was a teenage boy that was what we went to those movies for and nobody in their right mind would have released a slasher pic that wasn't Rated R. Today most of those movies (Prom Night & When A Stranger Calls remakes, Sorority Row) are rated PG-13. They're clearly made for teenage girls and just feel too tame. My Bloody Valentine is from the days when these movies were made for teenage boys.
MY BLOODY VALENTINE IS ANOTHER 1980'S SLASHER MOVIE MADE THROUGH PARAMOUNT PICTURES (FRIDAY THE 13TH) DURING AN ERA WHEN THESE MOVIES WERE APPRECIATED. NOW LOST AMONGST CULT COLLECTERS, IT OFFER GREAT INSIGHT INTO WHAT GOOD HORROR MOVIES USED TO BE.
FRESH STORYLINE AND A DESCENT SCRIPT MAKE FOR THE MOST PART OF A GOOD MOVIE. THE ACTING COULD BE MUCH BETTER (EVEN FOR A CHEAP HORROR MOVIE) BUT THE BLOOD AND ORIGINAL KILL SEQUENCES MAKE UP FOR IT. DEFINITELY WORTH WATCHING LATE AT NIGHT AND A MUST OWN FOR YOUR COLLECTION IF YOU ARE A HORROR FAN.
