This DVD set(2 DVDs) was complete and very well done, even if it had an important (TO ME!) deletion from the original roadshow version of the movie.
The movie itself has been tagged "The definitive Bounty." Marlon Brando bragged he wasted 4M making it. After all, what movie in recollection had the actual ship built the old fashioned way? And he DID marry Tarita.
But this DVD does NOT have the original topless scene between Tarita and Brando. HECK!! And the 1st and last scenes shown in the ABC Movie of the Week version are only in the Special Features section.
Like all "Bounty" movies, the story line does NOT stick to the actual story in many places. For example, Christian was NOT second in command until the original guy fell sick. And he didn't die from trying the save the burning ship. He was actually killed by some of the Tahitians who rebelled against being virtual slaves to the Bounty's crew.
I guess ya gotta fantasize about SOMEthing! But Brando is no Gable!
However, the realism is there, (YOU try sailing around Cape Horn in the middle of winter) as well as breathtaking color. The 2nd DVD shows many facets of making the movie, including building the "Bounty" replica.
All in all, I heartily recommend this version of the DVD set. Just don't expect to see any topless natives!
I bought this great movie because I hadn't seen it since it was in the theaters. I've had the soundtrack on cassette and have marveled at Bronislau
Kaper's magnificent score. The music greatly enhanced this motion picture.
The island location used in filming was so beautiful. The story is up there
with the best of movies, especially since it is based on fact. Trevor Howard
gives a superb performance as Captain Bligh. I totally recommend adding this
movie and soundtrack to your DVD and CD collection.
This was a very special film. The HMS Bounty was reconstructed for this film. I was fortunate to visit this ship in St Petersburg Florida recently. What a thrill. A trip back in time. I'm a Navy vet that spent 3 1/2 years at sea on a nuclear powered heavy cruiser, what a comparison. Everyone should see this film.
Brando's best!! This is a one of a kind film-- from the hand-built ship as the floating set to the highest quality of talented performers. All set in the luxury of Tahaiti. Brando's character, Christian, sustains the most amazing character arc-- shifting between the flippant uppercrust to a mutineer, a man without a country. If you haven't seen it, you must!!
Great classic movie. A little romantized from the true story but increbible cinematography. The ship was built in Canada in 1960 for this movie shot in 1962 and was to be burnt at the end as the script as history portrayed. Marlon Brando refused to finish the picture if they burned the ship so it was spared and was actively sailed up untill its sinking in hurricane Sandy 2012. A great historical loss. The captain and a deck hand who was a descendant of Christian were also lost. Great movie to see the ship in all her glory.
