I have the VHS, DVD and D-VHS (digital theater) versions of this movie. The VHS version has roughly the same 220 or so lines of resolution. The DVD of course is much better quality at 400. The Digital Theater (D-VHS) VHS at 1080i is the best for sure and was way ahead of it's time, coming out years before Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Unfortunately, D-VHS never caught on and is now out of production (since 2005). Movies are no longer available through JVC's Digital Theater website but are listed on Amazon, Half, eBay, and other sites as well.
I do not have a Sony Blu-Ray machine, but I believe that this movie is also out in that format as well. You would have a similar viewing experience watching it in Blu-Ray HD as you would with D-VHS.
This is a fun movie. Archeologist and adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) is about to be hanged "For having a VERY good time". Evie (Rachel Wiesz), is an Egyptologist and librarian who has come across an ancient map showing the location of Hamunaptra, the ancient city of the dead. For saving O'Connell's life, he has agreed to show her where it is. Upon arriving, along with a competing team of American treasure hunters, everything goes crazy when they discover the mummy of Imhotep. He had suffered the Hyumdai, by being buried alive for indiscretion with Pharaoh's wife. If resurrected, he would return as a scourge on the land. While reading an inscription from the "Book of the Dead", Evie unintentionally restores Imhotep. The rest of the movie is consumed with trying to send him back. This is an action packed film and has moments that are funny. The characters of "Benny", a small time crook, and Evie's brother who is a well-intentioned scoundrel are funny, and of course there is Evie (Rachel Weisz), she's a doll!
There are so many reasons this movie is wonderful, from Brendon Frasier's amazing performance to the well-developed story. Never a dull moment!
