This is a plain vanilla phone for someone that wants to use a phone primarily to talk (remember that?)and perhaps text a little. I went searching for this model because I "upgraded" to something else a couple years ago and missed the W385 every since. It has a nice feel with a nonslip rubbery coating and the battery lasts for several days on a charge. It has a substantial build with a rugged hinge. The screen isn't large, so don't plan on doing much online web browsing (but then, if that's what you are looking for you wouldn't be buying this phone anyway). It has a camera, if you happen to need one. I bought a Verizon W385 from Electronics4U. It wasn't clear to me from their description, but it was a Verizon prepaid phone. I couldn't activate it on my Verizon account by dialing *228 - send. I was able to activate it once I went to the Verizon online activation site and entered the phones MEID number. At that point *228 - send activated it quickly.
One downside it that this phone wasn't able to utilize the Verizon Backup Assistant feature (stores your phone numbers online and can restore them to your phone). Verizon changed their system software about a year ago, and older phones can't download the backup assistant software. According to the Verizon forum, you should be able to take the phone to a Verizon corporate phone store and get the phone "reflashed" to enable the software download, but most people that have tried have found the store staff either unhelpful, clueless, or both.......
This phone also doesn't have a miniSd cad slot to increase internal memory.
Bottom line, if you want a simple phone that works mainly as a phone without needing lots of bells and whistles, this is a gem!
It's a nice basic phone for those like myself who don't
like the extra bells and whistles. The Motorola w385 is an
average phone with the capability for talk, text and picture
messaging. Bottom line is, this is a great phone for the average
user who doesn't like the fancy smart phones like Blackberry or
doesn't like all the extras. My complaint is that it doesn't have a very
good ringtone selection.
size and structure
long battery life
not a very good selection of ringtones
This is a basic phone, but that's what I wanted. It is a Verizon phone but I am using it with PagePlus Prepaid (which uses Verizon cell towers) because I use very few minutes now. The phone works fine. The battery holds for several days because I don't use it much. I use the speaker function (about 2 feet away from me) to keep it away from my ear and brain because it does not have a way to connect a hard-wired mic/earpiece, and the people on the other end have never complained that they can't hear me, etc. I understand it is BlueTooth capable, but I don't use it that way because I don't want radio waves beaming into my brain constantly. I also bought a brand new spare battery on eBay as a back up which was readily available and very cheap; same goes for the 110v wall charger. I highly recommend this phone for people who don't need all the bells and whistles. To me, it's a phone that I carry in the car for emergencies, and to make calls from or receive calls occasionally. I keep it in order to retain my old phone number. With PagePlus, it could cost me as little as $30 a YEAR. Highly recommend the phone, and PagePlus. By the way, if you are smart and prepared, PagePlus' customer support is excellent. My experience was that all the slamming of them online is by stupid people who weren't properly prepared when they called customer support. Get your ducks in a row and they are fine. At least, that was my experience. This phone (and PagePlus) make for a cheap and excellent cell phone solution. No more $43 - $60 charges a month for me, and my personal policy is to never, never, never EVER sign a cell phone contract. Buy this phone on eBay instead, and save yourself a ton of money during this deliberately manufactured Greater Depression.
This phone is slim and compact.
Very good voice clarity.
I think one of the best phone for the basic use.
Not great for text messaging ,or picture capturing purposes.
However, has VGA camera and Bluetooth connectivity.
I was replacing an old LG VX3200 cell phone that had a very short battery life (2 hrs. talk time & 3 days max on standby) and this Motorola W385 ranked fairly high on several electronic review sites. What they said was true - talk time averages about 4 hours and, even better, standby time is approximately 15 days. The phone's heavier than I expected but it is durable and sturdy and easy handle. Set up was a breeze and while I wasn't looking, or in need, of a bunch of 'bells & whistles' this phone has enough to make the average user happy.
