I purchased this phone specifically because I am a long time Blackberry user making the switch to Android for more compatibility with my Android tablet. Having only had the phone for a few days, my review is a bit limited. I did want to say that one of the major criticisms I saw about this phone prior to purchase concerned the screen resolution. I have not found this to be lacking. It is true that some images look washed out or blurry, but others are crisp and clear. Therefore, I would attribute onscreen picture quality to the quality of the photograph itself not to the screen resolution.
The screen is smaller than the average Android phone but of course as a Blackberry user, I am perfectly comfortable with that. I prefer the Blackberry form factor and this Charm comes pretty close to that. I do wish the operating system could be upgraded to Android 2.2 because there are just far too many applications in the Market that are not compatible with the older operating system, including some that I regularly used on my Bold. Onboard memory is lacking, particularly because T-Mobile and Motorola pre-load a bunch of apps onto the device and many of those are useless to me. However, by rooting the phone and using a different app from the market, I was able to work around this issue. The home screens also require removing several pre-added widgets or otherwise are unnecessarily cluttered and difficult to navigate.
Battery life is poor especially when compared to a Blackberry. After just a few days, I've realized that the extended life battery is a must. The camera is so-so and lacks the flash that is standard on Blackberries.
Email, contacts, and calendar syncing are flawless. The Motorola phone portal application is an adequate replacement for Blackberry Desktop manager for managing files but does not have a tether feature for on the go internet. A separate tethering application is necessary for that. It does have the little bonus of texting directly from the computer which can be useful for some. Overall, I give the phone a good rating. It's better suited for email, messaging, light web browsing and occasional use of other mobile apps like banking, Ebay, and Amazon. Like with most Blackberries, because of the screen size, it would not be a good choice for game playing, watching videos, or reading books.
Okay I just had to write a review because I was going to replace this 7 year old phone when I got a free insurance replacement, only to find out this phone is better than most new phones! Yeah it's only 3G but the kicker is the wifi is 150mbs! yeah 150, not 15, that means you don't need 3G or 4G for internet use. If you don't have access then this phone may not be for you, but I have access on the train, at the coffee shop, restaurants and if I'm at someone's house with no reception I can just turn on the wifi calling. An impressive way to test the ability of this phone is go into the youtube app and turn on the camcorder, then take a video and upload it, it will upload as fast as a laptop. If you don't go into the youtube app and record a video too long it wont upload though, the app stops it, but then you can just make clips. The camera takes high resolution pics that you can use as a desktop background on a 27" LCD monitor, the only catch is they have to be in day light or a room lit like daylight, because there is no flash and low light pics suffer, same with the camcorder. This phone has a dual microphone which means you hear everything and they hear you, especially on speaker phone. I could put this phone on speaker while I was cooking and they didn't even know they were on speaker. The android 2.0 is also the least glitchy they say and with a 32GB SD card you're right up there with the top new phones for storage. I could load albums of music and with some good tube headphones the frequency response is phenomenal, never needed an ipod at the gym with this phone in an armband. I have to admit I'm in the habit of using this size keyboard which only a few other phones have, but it's efficient because you can text from the palm of your hand and a thumb which is good for inopportune times. I also love the size which fits in a shirt pocket or even the front pocket of pants. Some reviews say the battery life is terrible, but what they don't tell you is all phones come with an extended battery which only adds about 2mm of thickness to the bottom half of the phone and keeps the phone charged all day. The extra battery is also convenient if your battery ever does die without a charger around because it holds a charge. Another great thing about this phone is it has a track pad on the back if your fingers are ever too dirty to use the screen. I never had a problem with the touch screen in 7 years and the only reason insurance replaced it was the keyboard light went out so I couldn't see the keys in the dark, but could still use the touch keyboard. The phone is solidly built and I like the rubberized plastic that seems to bounce and I have dropped it countless times and it was never damaged or flew apart like my Blackberrys did. If Motorola came out with this phone just the way it looks with all the new features of their best phones I think Blackberry would go out of business and I would have one perfect phone.
The seller is great, and it is a really charm cell phone, I love it! Android operating system is very good. The screen is small but very responsive to touch. The physical keyboard is very useful and convenient. It has excellent 3D gaming capabilities
I have no complaints about the vendor nor the phone. My hands are much larger than the key pad and I found it hard to use. I have authoritse in them that makes even hard for me to use the computer key board. I will have to go to a larger key board pretty soon. the vendor was very pleasant to work with and I told him that he could charge me more for restocking fees if he wanted to. He did not so to do business with him again is very likely. Ease of use I gave it a three for it is not the fault of the phone. Battery life did not keep the phone to give it a rating so I gave it a five. Price wise I think that drew me to it. If I didn't have the hand medical problems I would still have the phone.
I want to experiment with Android OS and the Android market. That is why I look for this phone. One added value is the "motoblur" feature. This feature really works !! Also you can synn all your social media accounts with one click and stay in touch with your friends every minute in a simple fast way. This phone also has radio and it is good when you do not want to listen the same music of your storage card. The life of the battery depends on use, one day using wifi+bluetooh+music+radio+reviewing emails and social media. The greatest thing is the cost compared with an iphone or a samsung. Also the design is great and colorful!
