Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewExcellent

  • THE GOOD

The Motorola Atrix 4G features a dual-core processor and a sharp qHD (quarter HD) display. The Android 2.2 smartphone has a sleek design and a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera for video calls, and an HDMI port.

  • THE BAD

No 1080p HD video recording or playback at launch. You can't install non-Market third-party apps. We didn't experience great HSPA+ 4G data speeds.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The laptop dock is a decidedly cool (and pricey) feature, but the dual-core Motorola Atrix 4G has plenty to offer on its own. The smartphone packs speed and high-end features into a sleek package and earns its place at the top of AT&T's Android lineup.

Great phone! Step up from iPhone!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I bought this product as an alternative to the iPhone, for more customizable features, such as ringtones, bluetooth sharing, and for the Google/Android OS. The fingerprint reader security feature was also a big draw. The display is really clear, and the screen itself is great because it is scratch proof, etc. (Gorilla). The internal memory is also pretty big and can be expanded with an external memory card.

The only thing that gets a little confusing are the tips and hints and how to get to some of them after you read it, when you first start using it. I thought I would be able to change the tone for text messages, but as of yet, I haven't found a way and don't know if it is a feature. Also, in order to change the main google account that you register with, you have to restart the phone to factory settings. Other than that, it is pretty much easy to use. I haven't yet downloaded too many apps, but when searching, they have much of the same ones as the iPhone, so that is a definite plus.

There is almost nothing I don't like about this phone. I am really happy with it thus far.

Rugged, fast and easy to repair

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This is a really decent phone. I've had mine for over a year now and it is built like a tank. It's been dropped from 10+ feet up and still worked like it was supposed to with no broken glass. It was recently taken out by an accidental spill but I was able to easily repair it with a phone from eBay with a broken screen. It's almost like the engineers designed this phone to be serviced. There are almost no clips or glue inside of it, 90% of it is held together by screws.

Moto Blur has gotten better over the last few revisions but it's still not the best so it gets a 4/5 for features. The fingerprint reader is really cool and the camera is of high quality however the phone does lock a little more often than it should. The battery will go all day and charges quickly. I've had no issue with battery while owning this phone.

The apps that it came with are kind of lame and the complete overhaul of the UI with the 2.3.4 upgrade caused it to score 3/5 on Ease of use. The lack of a ICS update is also frustrating as this phone seems more than powerful enough to run it.

If you want a rugged, fast phone with a decent camera this could be the phone for you. One warning is that if you want to run custom distros or really mess a rooted device you might want to avoid it. If you're cool with what Moto provides it's worth the money.

Good bang for your buck!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Call is clear and on speaker is very loud. Texting with swype makes quick messaging easy, and if you arent a big fan of swype, the screen, while not overly large is easy to type on.

This is a powerful 1Ghz dual core phone, capable of browsing through the UI and web easily, and with a little work, you can play PSX games on it. It's 1GB of RAM is also impressive and helps with keeping this phone speedy.

On top of your normal android security, you also get a quality finger print scanner. Though you will encounter more false negatives, and may have to make several swipes to unlock it, but hey, its better than false positives.

It's QHD display isn't as bad as most reviewers say, unless you're serious about watching movies on a phone. The 5MP wide screen camera takes good pictures, though it can be grainy at times, you cannot change ISO settings. The promised 1080p video recording capability was never delivered, though there is SOME hope with this year's ICS update. However it's 720p recording is good enough, but is grainy in low light conditions, and is disappointing if you are expecting HD quality, but that doesn't mean you cant go out and shoot great family videos or youtube movies.

Battery life on this phone is amazing, and that's without modifying the phone. It is possible to go through a day of moderate use without having to worry about plugging it in.
