Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewExcellent

  • THE GOOD

The Motorola Atrix 4G features a dual-core processor and a sharp qHD (quarter HD) display. The Android 2.2 smartphone has a sleek design and a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera for video calls, and an HDMI port.

  • THE BAD

No 1080p HD video recording or playback at launch. You can't install non-Market third-party apps. We didn't experience great HSPA+ 4G data speeds.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The laptop dock is a decidedly cool (and pricey) feature, but the dual-core Motorola Atrix 4G has plenty to offer on its own. The smartphone packs speed and high-end features into a sleek package and earns its place at the top of AT&T's Android lineup.

Great trouble free fast multitasking phone. Business or pleasure or both. P

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The ATRIX 4G, though outdated at 3 years old, really is packed full of features. The car dock software, the webtop software, and full Firefox browser using all the motorolla docking stations turns the phone into a PC. I use the lapdock notebook, the car docking station and the bluetooth keyboard and bt mouse while hooked up with HDMI cable to my tv also for full pc experience. The ATRIX 4G also has finger print reader to lock and also encrypt phone. Dual 1 core processor is still plenty fast. The 12gb built in memory and the external mini memory card expandable to additional 32 gb memory. That's 48 gigs of internal memory with ability to swap in other 32 gb cards. Just a great phone and computer. Just bought my 2ndtv ATRIX 4g after nearly 3 years of trouble free use. First phone got a leaking lcd screen from dropping g it many times HARD. great phone especially now with low cost either licked AT&T or unlocked. Get the car dock and the entertainment center package to experience Full pc usesge potential.

Its fast, easy, and the update hides is biggest flaw, motoblur. Good phone.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I got this phone coming from and Inspire 4G, and it was a bit getting used to. The screen size is a tad smaller (coming from a 4.3), but the display i sharp. The main reason that I wanted this phone was for the dual core action, and it did not disappoint. The day to day use feels great and it honestly shows the difference in processing speed coming from the single cores. The finger print reader is great too. People say that its for security buff, but its not. Its for lazy people. No code, no pattern, just rub your phone to unlock it. ALL PHONES NEED THIS. The best thing about it is also the worst. The OTA update to gingerbread is great and all, but if you like to root your phone, then this will pretty much sink all hope of that. Boot loader relocked, and locked tight.
The camera leaves a bit to be desired, but it works for what is needs to, and the front cam is again, workable. I use it for skype alot now thanks to the update, but be outdoors, or under a lamp to get any good shots out of the front cam.

Battery life is average. If you have been using smart phones, you know if you get a day, your lucky. This one can give a solid half day, all the bells as whistles on. I mean, BT, wifi, GPS, the whole nine. Go green and you can get the day.

Its a solid phone. I am glad I bought it. I still think HTC is the king though, but this will tide me over till the Holiday comes out. :)

A very good dual-core Android device

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

My experience so far with the Motorola Atrix 4G has been very favorable. The device itself while somewhat more "plasticky" in construction, it functionally speaking performs very very well - Dual cores do make a difference. I will admit that I don't like MotoBlur. I am using an alternate launcher, LauncherPro Plus. The Atrix really shines when somewhat unbound from MotoBlur. Ideally vanilla Android would be best for it but until that can be rectified at a later time, I am content with using LauncherPro Plus.

I bought the unit with a cracked digitizer knowing I would replace it so that I would have the unit as it is supposed to be. Replacing the digitizer (touch screen) is not difficult to replace but is time consuming, one needs to be careful not to damage the digitizer ribbon cable.

Once this was done, it was a matter of getting up and running with my sim card and my microSDHC card (16Gb). My previous phone is a Google Nexus One and I got it at launch. I figured it was about time to get a newer device and for my intended uses, the Atrix pretty much fits the bill with the plus of being equipped with HSPA+. I'm a gophone user on AT&T, but my primary service provider is T-Mobile. I figure once I unlock the Atrix I can use it on T-Mobile with their HSPA+ speeds as well. At least that's one thing that both AT&T and T-Mobile have in common is that they are both using the same HSPA+ bands... (I know this for a fact because I also have a Dell Streak 7 which I verified usage on both AT&T and T-Mobile HSPA+ connections).

I just wanted to post this with general impressions regarding usage of the Atrix and as such I wouldn't consider this a full-blown review.

If one is looking for a good Android device to bridge usage between service providers, you can't beat the Atrix.

The best android phone, (without a reasonable doubt), to this date.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I bought this phone because i was looking for the best of the best android can offer, yet at a reasonable price. This phone actually has it all, and i dont think i have even put to its maximum test. It really is fast, doing anything,... of course i got rid of the bloatware it comes with (AT&T, and MotoBlur)... installed Ginger Blur, and its been a dream come true.

What i like the most its the battery life. its quite amazing for a smartphone. I always carry it with all things on (Bluetooth, WiFi and Network),.. and brightness at max, i even surf the web or play some games, watch some series on the SDcard,.... No problem, gets me through my day, without a complain.

What i dislike, is that it gets a little warm after continuous use (like watchin a movie)... i mean really hot, (like 98 F + )... but as i have seen in other smartphone, (HTC) also gets warm after using it for a while. It helps isolate the heat from the hand by using a silicone cover preferably

In summary, it is the best android phone, (without a doubt), to this date. You make your own judgement.

P.S. Did i mention that you can connect it to HDTV and watch movies and series with it? Did you know that it has 11GB ( not 16GB, because 5 of that is used internaly for apps and OS ), aside from the SDCARD

excellent value for an aging ex-flagship

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Once the flagship Android phone for the first half of 2011, the Atrix still holds up well. The fingerprint reader is still unique only to this phone, the Atrix 2 dropped this great feature. Dual core phones are fairly ubiquitous for the high end market now so I would still place this unit near the high end. The 16gb internal memory plus up to another 32gb in an SD card makes the storage capacity a very large 48gb. Especially with class 4 32gb cards only $32 on sale now. The Tegra 2 chip and 1gb of RAM makes the Atrix still faster than the majority of Android phones.
