| When a cataclysmic force merges conquerors from two universes, conflict is inevitable. Kombat forces friends to fight, worlds to collide, and unlikely alliances to be forged. In order to save all they know, the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat must wage war against the combined might of the DC Universe (DCU). How can either side prevail when rage blinds them to the dark threat poised to destroy them all? For the first time ever Scorpion, Sub Zero and the warriors from Midway's billion-dollar fighting franchise face off against Batman, Superman and other iconic and powerful DC Super Heroes, featuring signature attacks for both sides and a unique and intertwining storyline, written as a collaboration between the Mortal Kombat creative team and top comic scribes Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. Choose your side and challenge your opponents with a new fighting system including Freefall Kombat and Klose Kombat along with dynamic multi-tiered environments. Plus, pick your favorite character from MK or DCU and pursue a fighting adventure in the new single player mode with an intertwined storyline and two unique perspectives. | |

I bought this game because of Mortal Kombat's bloody violence. Including DC characters is icing on the cake! Classic beat 'em up with Fatalities, Heroic Brutalities, Free Fall, Test Your Might, and Klose Kombat.
This game plays just like any recent Soul Calibur game. Characters move on a 3-d plane, moving around the opponent, while fighting on the 2-d plane, in front or behind of each other.
There are several modes to play: Storymode, 1 Player challenges, 2 Player VS, Online, etc.
The storyline is divided into 2, one to play as MK characters and the other for DC. Each one is further divided into chapters, each chapter is played by a different character from either MK or DC. You have to play as every character, a nice inclusion. Eventually join forces to save both universes.
Online that is free to play (PS3) without a need for a pass connects players. A small chat system is included. There is little to no lag now.
There are NO downloadable content, just small updates to balance the game more.
Total of 22 characters, 2 must be unlocked via playing storymode on both sides, then press R1 in the character select menu (VS mode). Everyone has their own special moves and finishers. VS is the best part.
I found it enjoyable to have Subzero freeze Batman, only to shatter him entirely later or have Superman pound Scorpion into the ground (without killing him) with a heroic brutality.
With all those great features, more could have been added.
If you want something more natural to Mortal Kombat, check out Mortal Kombat 9 (2011) for all the gore and blood as the original games with many more characters.
If you want more DC, check out DC Universe Online. It is now free to play and is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

Graphics: Good 6.5/10
The graphics are clean and crisp, however, they do not take full advantage of the next generation hardware. The models are well down and the movements true to the MK series. The DC characters (especially The Joker) are well done and provide a good visual crossover. The backgrounds are basic, and were an after thought.
Sound: Good – 7/10
It is what you come to expect from a Mortal Kombat fighting game. In depth sound effects and background clashes and music soundtrack are decent.
Gameplay: Good - 7.5/10
Smooth animations, and a great return to the MK series. This is probably the best iteration since Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. This gets back to the basic combat and really looks at making it an enjoyable experience.
The combat can seem a bit slow, but the ease of pulling off moves, combined with the crossover gameplay and online modes, make this a worthy step in the MK Universe of fighting.
Replay Value: Good – 7.5/10
The single player story mode, though interesting, is short, even considering playing both sides. The lack of extras or inclusion of things found in MK games in the past, really take away from the single player experience.
The multiplayer is the real reason to buy this game, and it is the only reason to own this game. The matches are fun, and they keep you coming back.
Overall: Good – 7/10
By no means is this a bad game, but in the Fall release of 2008, with such big titles, it fails to pack a punch. This may have done better as a Spring/Summer release. Please know that I am a MK faithful, and I love it. Looking at this from a non-biased standpoint, it is hard to argue being a true standout.
This Mortal Kombat iteration was geared to appeal to the mass audiences. Taking away much of the violence and brutal fatalities to get a T for Teen rating, takes away a lot what the MK brand was. In the early 90’s, Mortal Kombat pushed the edge, and this version plays it safe to sell copies of games.
With other fighting games such as Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Caliber 4, and the up and coming Street Fighter 4, this fails to deliver graphically and in the gameplay department. Once you get past “Batman is fighting Sub-Zero – awesome” moments, not much is left.
This game is short, so be prepared. The single player experience lacks the extras and unlockables, and lowers the replay value.
For the first time, the makers of Mortal Kombat have decided to invoke the right of all superhero properties and create a crossover. This crossover is with the Detective Comics Universe. Big names like Superman, Batman and the Green Lantern mix it up with Liu Kang, Scorpion and Sub-Zero in a match to the near death. I say near death because the DCU superheroes are not allowed to kill, but the super villains and all of the MK characters have no such restrictions.
What this game comes down to is a slugfest between two different properties in a storyline that forces the good and bad people to eventually team up to separate the two merging realms. The merger of the MK and DCU realms are also the reason why powerhouses like Superman and Green Lantern simply cannot take out their enemies in one hit.
After playing every fighting game in MK history ever available on a game console, it comes to no surprise how the controls are essentially the same. The controls are still low and high punches and kicks with blocking. Of course entering a specific sequence with these buttons creates special moves and finishers. There are a few new tweaks, such as the new testing one's might and freefall kombat sequences and the ability to increase certain statistics during a match for a small period.
The game modes are divided between both the MK and DCU properties. The storyline is based on each character’s perspective and eventually the two properties merge and separate with a mix of interactions. Returning is the same fight mode that has been around since the beginning. Players fight their way up a line of random fighters to become number one. This game also sports an online mode that enters players in to a waiting room to make or await challenges. Keep in mind some players may rank low, but in essence are seasoned experts at Mortal Kombat.
The main draw of this game is the inclusion of the DCU characters. The online play and the additional tweaks are appreciated. They add some freshness to an old formula. There are four additional characters to be unlocked, two from each property. This game is a buy for players who love the MK and DCU properties.
I bought this game to pass some time until later this year when the big titles will be released. It's a great game and very fun, if you are into this kind of thing. Its not as over-the-top with the violence as the other Mortal Kombat games due to the teen rating so if you are looking for that try elsewhere. The story is satisfactory and the cast of characters is as well. It's interesting to fight with characters from opposing universes due to the wide variety of moves. Some of the opponents in story mode can be difficult and quite frustrating, but after a couple of tries you'll get the hang of it. The free-fall fight sequences are very cool and it's fun to see who has what kind of crazy take down to preform. The graphics are decent and since this is an action-packed fighting simulator, you don't necessarily sit there and pick out the tiny details that are not perfect in the environment. The only time you'll notice any "annoying" graphical errors is during the cut scenes. Much like the graphics, the voice acting is decent and at times a bit corny. Overall, this is an awesome choice for those who enjoy fighting games and I highly recommend it! (The price is also much more reasonable now because it has been added to the Playstation 3's Greatest Hits list.)
My kids saw the commercial for this game and immediately sat down to write santa, asking for it. We bought a like-new used copy on ebay, then put it in to make sure it would play when they went to bed. My wife and I played until 1 am, and we're not even into video games. The graphics are amazing, with "damage" done to each player as they fight (think black eyes and torn clothing). It is extremely easy to learn, as we were brawling within minutes of inserting it into the ps3. Overall, I give it a 9.5 out of 10, with the only deduction being that superman can be beaten. I mean, come on, he's superman! But anyway, a great game for any age.
