Movie synopsis
Combining traditional ideas of marriage and family with the realities of modern life, MONSOON WEDDING is a lighthearted film from director Mira Nair (SALAAM BOMBAY!). The majority of the film takes place inside the home of an extended Punjabi family living in New Delhi who has gathered together for the arranged wedding of Adita (Vasundhara Das). She is to marry Hemant (Parveen Dabaas), a man who works in the United States. This means leaving her family home to go live with him, and though Adita says she welcomes the new opportunity, it is clear that she already feels homesick. Also at issue is the fact that she is still in love with her former boss, Vikram (Sameer Arya), a television producer who promises to divorce his wife but never does. Though Adita is careful to hide her true feelings from her family, her sister Ria (Shefali Shetty) worries that she is marrying for the wrong reasons. Ria has issues of her own. She wants to go to school in the United States and become a writer, but her family would prefer her to follow a more traditional path, and they claim that money is the reason. Meanwhile, the rebellious wedding planner, P.K. Dubey (Vijay Raaz) is falling in love with the family maid, Alice (Tilotama Shome). Sparks also fly between two of Adita's cousins, Ayesha (Neha Dubey) and Rahul (Randeep Hooda), who meet at the wedding and find that their conflicting values are a good challenge for each other. A festive film, MONSOON WEDDING is a swirling family comedy.

Re: Monsoon Wedding (DVD)

I love the story line of this movie. It is based around a wedding that was arranged for a man's only daughter and an Indian boy who lives in America. The family comes back to Delhi, India from all parts of the world in order to participate in the next four days of ceremonies leading up to the wedding. Along the way dark secrets are uncovered and dealt with, which in turns keeps things fresh and exciting. Why did I buy this movie? Simple, because I LOVE IT! {lol}

I love this Movie!!! Such Beautiful Love story--a Must

This is one of my favorite love stories. The Picture and subtitles are excellent. Most of it is in English but some of the people talk in Hindi and then the Subtitles will come on. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to find a beautiful and unique love story to buy. It is definitely worth the money and your family and friends will love it to. The Indian culture is so unique and colorful and this movie brings out the best in India and shows how the Indian culture celebrates weddings. Buy it---you won't be disappointed.

One of my all time favorites

I saw this movie when it first came out. Recently, I rented it again off netflix. When, after about a week, I was still watching it repeatedly and not wanting to return it I decided this is just one of those movies I wanted to own.
This movie is very sweet, very gentle. The characters range in attributes and are very human. My favorite character is the wedding planner, who eats chrysanthumums throughout the movie. This is a movie about love and family. While not for children, it is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon or evening.

The first time I saw this movie i fell in love with it
however the second time i watched it, I didn't enjoy it as much.
It doesn't portray realistic Indian family life
however it is a beautiful film.
I liked the Love story between Dubie and Alice.
Very sweet ~ If you like punjabi dancing, music, and culture,
Monsoon wedding would be a wonderful choice.

Great Introduction to Bollywood

This is the first Indian movie I ever watched. It is in English and that makes it easy on American viewers. I find that when I mention Indian movies to American friends they seem intimidated or turned off by subtitles. It has never been a problem for me. What impressed me about this movie was the dance sequences, especially the one at the end when the usually unhappy character gets caught up in the excitement because he wins his girl, too. Can all Indian women dance like this, with so much excitement and energy. They put Americans to shame. And it's not just the young ones, but the middle aged and older who have talent.
The plot is like most Bollywood movies meant for entertainment, the obstacles to a couple getting married. There are troubles to overcome for both bride and groom, but they there is no pulling of punches or glossing over the issues in dealing with them. No skirting of the trouble involved.
Needless to say, I have seen dozens of Bollywood classics since then, most with subtitles, so that it takes adjusting to movies without them.
