Album Notes
Liner Note Author: Dave Marsh .Photographers: Michael Ochs; Joe Bangay; Sherry Rayn Barnett; Paul Cox; Ron Wolfson; Robin Kaplan; R.J. Capak.Unknown Contributor Roles: Mark Stevens; Ned Haley.Available only through Time Life Music, Modern Rock Collection isn't really "modern rock" in the sense for which the term was used back in the '80s, when it essentially referred to the more college-radio-friendly strain of alternative rock. This disc, however, concentrates on new wave pop hits, most of them pretty big, or at least well-known. It's a pretty good collection; even though there are no surprise choices or revelations, it's a good basic primer of '80s new wave, and even if some tracks will inevitably be duplicated elsewhere in your collection, there are some big hits not included on Rhino's stellar Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s series. Overall, it's a thoroughly decent addition to anyone's new wave library. ~ Steve Huey

EXCELLENT SELECTION OF 80'S TUNES WITHOUT THE FILLER

Created: 03/27/10
Oh my goodness. I was in the mood for an excellent collection of 80's songs, and I found it. This collection is really cool. Alot of these types of collections include somewhat awful songs that you have to play in order to get to the good ones. This CD contains ALL the good songs and doesn't force you to skip anything. I was pleased that CD 1 started out with The Fixx song "One Thing Leads to Another". This is pretty much the tone of the entire thing. These are those 80's songs that you listened to in your favorite club in the 80's that bring back alot of great memories. One of my personal favorites is "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats. This collection really seems to be worth more than it costs. The songs make you want to get up, pull that skinny tie out of the closet or the neon bangles, and party the entire night. I see that Time Life has other Modern Rock discs for the decade and if they are a reflection of this one, I want them all. You definitely will not regret purchasing this. I believe that people who are not familiar with the 80's or this type of music would even enjoy it. This is no Steve Winwood and is what the cool kids would have been listening to. Enjoy.
