Movie synopsis
The science-fiction thriller MINORITY REPORT, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, is based on a short story by renowned writer Philip K. Dick. In the year 2054, in Washington, D.C., murder has been eliminated thanks to Precrime, a program that uses the visions of three psychics, called Precogs (an abbreviation for precognitive thinkers), to arrest and imprison would-be murderers before they have a chance to kill. Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, a Precrime enforcer who believes in the system for his own personal reasons--years back his young son was abducted, and he has dealt with the loss by becoming a high-strung Precrime officer. The director of Precrime (Max von Sydow) is eager to take the program national, and feels threatened by an ambitious federal agent (Colin Farrell) who is bent on finding a flaw in the system. When Anderton finds himself accused of the future murder of a man he's never met, his faith in Precrime is instantly shaken. He goes on the run, and is trailed by the relentless Precrime police. In the tradition of BLADE RUNNER (also based on a Dick story), MINORITY REPORT is a dark, brooding vision of the future. Spielberg expertly mixes thrilling chase and suspense sequences (the best of which involves Anderton being pursued by eye-scanning mechanical spiders) and stunning special effects with a challenging look at society's willingness to sacrifice privacy and the notion of free will for convenience and security. MINORITY REPORT is a thought-provoking and exciting film that ranks with Spielberg's best.

a murder, you had not committed... yet

Review For: Minority Report (DVD, 2002, 2-Disc Set, Widescreen)

Steven Spielberg is at his directorial best with this action, adventure. Tom Cruise is at his acting best as a futuristic cop on the run. I was pleased to see one of the best directors team up with one of the best actors to make a brilliant movie.

Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, the chief of the Pre-Crime unit of the Washington D.C. police department. This unit stops murders before they happen, with the help of the "Pre-Cogs." The "Pre-Cogs" are three psychics who see the murders before they happen, and Cruise is the one who puts their visions together to predict the location, the killer, and the victim of the future crime. So far, the "Pre-Cog" division has been successful, with its six-year span going on with no murder ever happening. Things get complicated for the future of Pre-Crime when Detective Danny Witwer, played by Colin Farrell, is sent to inspect the operation. Anderton is suspicious of him, because he starts to see cracks in the system. When Anderton believes that the cracks are minor, he believes wrong.

Anderton sees another murder happening in the Pre-Cogs' visions and is shocked to see that he is the man committing the murder. Now that he is on the run from his own men, which of course is under the command of Witwer, Anderton must unravel the mystery of why he has to murder a man whom he hasn't even met yet. As time runs out, Anderton finds clues that there is a conspiracy behind it. Can he figure them out in time, or will Pre-Crime see its first murder in six years?

"Minority Report" is a movie with a fantastic storyline, one of the best I've ever heard of. The actors are great, the directing is great, of course, it's Spielberg. Even the effects are great, they are done with ILM. Roger Ebert says that this movie "reminds us why we go to the movies in the first place," and I agree with him.

Good sci-fi action mystery movie

Minority Report is a very good sci-fi mystery movie. It's set in the year 2054, not so far in the future that you must suspend your disbelief in order to enjoy the movie. Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, the chief of the Precrime division. Using three "pre-cogs" (people who can see into the future), Pre-crime catches criminals in the act before they actually commit their crimes. The Pre-crime division is so good that premeditated murder no longer exists in Washington D.C. The only kind of crimes that are left are crimes of passion. Everything changes once Anderton is shown commiting the murder of a man that he doesn't even know. Anderton must prove his innocence despite his "confirmed guilt" being recognized by the pre-cogs. This movie has a nice combination of story, action, special effects and acting. Not surprising considering Steven Spielberg directed the movie. It plays out like a good detective movie that will have you scrambling to solve the mystery. It also has Colin Farrell, as the cop trying to catch Anderton, in easily one of his most understated roles. I would recommend this movie to sci-fi fans, mystery buffs, Cruise or Farrell fans and anyone looking for something different from the normal big action movies.

A modern masterpiece - Underappreciated classic

Review For: Minority Report (DVD, 2002, 2-Disc Set, Widescreen)

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise teamed up for the first time on Minority Report, and the result was a modern day classic and one of the best sci-fi films of the 21st century. A great storyline coupled with tremendous action and effects, and then offset with an outstanding performance by Cruise all add up to a tremendous movie.

This is not old-school Steven Spielberg. This film is dark, violent, and has a deep, twisting plot with an amazing ending which keeps the viewer thinking long after watching it. It's a must watch, and a movie which gets better on repeated viewings.

Meanwhile, the special features on the second disc are very engrossing, as usual with Spielberg's films. Any time you get a chance to look behind the curtain at the most influential director of the last 40 years then it's worth doing.

All in all, this gets 5 out of 5 stars. If you haven't seen Minority Report, do it - NOW!

MINORITY REPORT (DVD,2002,FULL FRAME)

SUPERSTAR (TOM CRUISE) GIVES HIS "MOST POTENT ACTION PERFORMANCE" IN DIRECTOR STEVEN SPIELBERG'S MINORITY REPORT. FOR SIX YEARS,WASHINGTON D.C. HAS BEEN MURDER-FREE THANKS TO ASTOUNDING TECHNOLOGY WHICH IDENTIFIES KILLERS BEFORE THEY COMMIT THEIR CRIMES. BUT WHEN THE CHIEF OF THE PRECRIME UNIT (CRUISE) IS HIMSELF ACCUSED OF A FUTURE MURDER, HE HAS JUST 36 HOURS TO DISCOVER WHO SET HIM UP-OR HE'LL FALL VICTIM TO THE "PERFECT" SYSTEM HE HELPED CREATE. IT'S A MIND-BLOWING ACTION THRILLER THAT'S SUCH AN ACHIEVEMENT IT "REMINDS US WHY WE GO TO THE MOVIES IN THE FIRST PLACE".

Minority Report - A must see!

Blade runneresque setting minus the bots and Demolition Man meets The Fugitive plotline- these elements abound in this futuristic thriller. The special effects are okay, but the plot is the real reason to watch this movie. It's a great story with a twist at the end. Directed by Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise plays the part well. Seemed to be missing a little of the information which could have helped to understand the story more thoroughly. The pre-cog sequences on the run are a great idea and portrayed well.
