This flash is a monster and will put out a lot of light if needed. Under normal shooting conditions, it also can recycle quite a few times before the battery has to be recharged. It can be used in straight auto mode by setting the aperature to one of the available choices or if you have a camera that can operate in the TTL mode, it reads the exposure at the film plane. This can be very handy when using filters or in fill flash situations. These units are quite high $$$ if purchased new, but their life expectancy seems to be quite long and it can be used heavily. It can also be part of a home studio with other options that are available. It can also be used in various bounce modes with the head able to tilt and rotate in various directions. It is heavy to carry around with its separate battery, but that is the way it has to be so you can take advantage of its power and maintain short recycle times.
I shoot weddings and using my sb800 just doesnt cut it. It cant give me the power I need.
I work in Hawaii and have to shoot couples on a beach, high noon, no clouds, on the white Hawaiian sand! Talk about an exposure to make your eyes bleed! But using my Metz, i can shoot F13 1/250 and have the flash remove the shadows no problem at all. Using the Nikon flash, its like no flash at all!
Also using the dry fit batteries, I can just pop flash after flash w/out having to wait for the recycle light to come on. It recycles just about as fast as you can fire it.
Only negative is the Metz 60 series uses an external battery pack that hangs over your shoulder. The 45 series has the battery in the bottom of the handle, making it much easier but with less power/ slower recycle time.
Another bonus using the Metz 60 is that I can bounce my flash off high ceilings or walls w/out worrying. It has a mini fill flash in the front to fill in the shadows so you get natural looking light in every shot.
Conclusion: I wouldnt trade my Metz for any other flash! You can pick up a used one off Ebay for $120-$300 all the time!
Every once in a while there is something that is just that good. The Metz 60CT4 is one of these items. You have tons of power and accuracy built into the unit. Only TTL is better, and the firing voltage is approximately 6 volts, which makes this unit safe for digital cameras. Batteries are inexpensive and repairs are completed within a week at any pro shop. The 60CT4 has been a workhorse for me for over a decade, using only 2 units,(one which I accidentily broke into pieces)without having to worry. If you include the 60CT1 (I had 2 of which one still works) it has been 20 years. I have been able to shoot in the brightest daylight and completely fill in "racoon eyes" only using one flash. I have lit up large halls of over 600 guests using only one flash. I can bounce it off of almost any surface and still get decent exposures. It is a tough unit that can take a lot of abuse. I photograph weddings nearly every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and this unit serves me well.
This is still the the bast flash ever built. One flash could fill up a big room, even a church if you aim the head to the ceiling and the small fill flash just perfect for the front. This flash syncs with the Nikon D70 with the impressing 1/1250 of the second (yes this is not a typo). Even If you go out on a bright sunny day this flash still have power for a 1/250 sec F16 on a big group picture. The battery is just as phenomenal. My battery is about 6 years old and still going strong. If you are a professional photographer and you leave with out this flash you maybe have to redo the job.
This unit is very good performer it did everything I expected and more I do not ever leave it at home when going to a photo shoot. It is very dependable it my first of this series I am used to yhe 45cl 4 and the 45ct4 this is much better. My only regret was I did not have two battery packs. I love this unit and plan to keep it for a long time.
