In the 1950s a super-secret government agency was formed to monitor and police the activities of extraterrestrial aliens on the planet Earth. Some 40 years later a founding father of the agency, Agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), finds himself with a new smart-mouthed partner fresh from the NYPD who is soon dubbed Agent Jay (Will Smith). Their first mission is to save the Earth from destruction by a giant insectlike alien (Vincent D'Onfrio) that, incidentally, drives an exterminator's truck. Armed with their matching Ray-Bans, skinny ties, and space-age weapons that Jay barely understands--he calls the Neuralyzer the "flashy thing"--the new duo begin another average day of fighting intergalactic terrorists. An amazingly hip and terribly clever movie that riffs on everything from E.T.--THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL to CASABLANCA, this Barry Sonnenfeld film is based on the equally savvy comic book by Lowell Cunningham.
tommy lee jones and will smith are great together. tommy with his dry humor and will the young funny hot shot.
"Men In Black" is a fascinating and hilarious spectacle full of gags and special effects. The story is wonderfully told, creating a rather convincing setup that this agency could actually exist - whether the aliens exist or not is up for every to decide for himself. From the first moments the film races along at full throttle and lever lets go. The furious pace of the movie hardly gives viewers the chance to breathe until its final frames. From the whimsical opening - perfectly supported by Danny Elfman’s score - all the way to the furious and fiery finale of the movie, "Men In Black" is a non-stop thrill-ride.
Filled with characters of all sorts, ranging from stern to outrageously funny, and a menagerie of aliens, nothing in the movie is what it first seems. Whether it is the French Connection-style witness interrogation tactics of Kay, the tunnel scene with Elvis, or the opening with Mikey, the illegal alien, the movie is stringing up one memorable moment after another. Will Smith plays the street smart cop Jay dead-on, but it is ultimately Tommy Lee Jones who steals the show with his understated sarcasm and dry delivery of the most hilarious lines. Combined with the film’s eye-popping special effects, director Barry Sonnenfeld manages to create a movie in which you completely suspend your disbelief and simply enjoy what is happening in front of your eyes!
Comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly.
I dont usually like science fiction movies, but this movie was really good. I like both lead characters (Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith). They both did a really good job working together to make the movie humorous and were able to keep your attention throughout the entire movie. There is action and humor throughout the whole movie. I guess that's why I liked it. I tend to like action and comedy movies instead of drama or horror.
I bought this movie because I already have a copy of the sequel- Men in
Black II, but lost my copy of the first one.
From the Fresh Prince of BelAir to Men in Black Will Smith made the movie along with Tommy Lee Jones the pair of the teamed up made a terrific movie for all to enjoy especially my kids who wore out the VHS copy of the movie we had, and of course the epic case of trying to find movies in full screen edition is getting harder to find now that wide screen is becoming ever so popular. What I can't understand is why can't they make the movies in duel format so when it comes up on the DVD player you have your choice, but I guess it is to difficult for some, just like the new movie Wild Hogs if you want to buy a copy you can only get it in Wide Screen format that I feel is unfair to people the only own a Full Screen TV. The movie companies need to wake up and smell the coffee and give the consumer what they want.
